The movie was a very mixed bag for me.
The acting was fine. Garfield & Stone are great as Spidey/Peter and Gwen and they have great chemistry. Dane DeHane played a nice little psycho.
Jamie Foxx plays well and is relatable as Max Dillon.
And there's this awesome scene where Spidey --talks-- to Dillon/Electro instead of fighting and it comes across..well, very honest and real.

BUT…oh my god, what a terrible story.
It starts off with five minutes of backstory on Richard (and Mary) Parker.
What he was working on and what happened just before they dropped Peter at Ben & May.
This comes back several times but there's not a moment in the movie where I felt that it mattered. It hardly told anything new.
Peter's quest to find out feels..uninteresting.
Then we get Harry Osborn, who needs the research & results for different reasons and this at least makes a bit more sense.
However, it still doesn't require showing it in the beginning of the movie since he learns about it through Oscorp.

Speaking of the beginning. Other than a chaotic car chase at the start of the movie, I don't think there's any action and there's no true build up.
Instead the characters just keep doing their thing. Some names are dropped, some conclusions are made but still..
I think it takes about 80-90 minutes before anything truely interesting happens.

Once the shit does hit the fan..well..I dunno. The action looks nice, the stakes are pretty damn high.
The fight between Spidey and Electro is good. The fight between Spidey and a somewhat strange looking guy in armor* is mediocre.
Though of course the ramifications of the last fight are high. That was the one moment in the movie where I snapped back into the story.

Then, at the end, we get hints at what to come with another guy in armor* and…meh…I'm not on board if it looks the way things looks now.

*Armored enemies.. Ugh. I get that they want some realism in some way as far as tech looks, but the Rhino looks like crap and ridiculous.
Yes he's ridiculous in the comics too, but this isn't even fun to look at.
The goblin looks less impressive than the outfit they gave James Franco.
I mean, I have NO clue what they're going for with Harry. He looks like a troll doll at most with some spikey hair.
If I give the benefit of the doubt, I'm going to assume he's not quite yet a Goblin and will get an upgrade in the future.

(For the record, in our Dutch edition we did not get the X-Men scene)

A friend of mine got to see it early and he thought it was the Batman and Robin of the Spiderman series. It is a shame the original Spiderman movies, God, I can't believe I have to write that, didn't touch Gwen Stacy. I understand you can't have a dark ending for the first film, but it would have been nice if they got a chance to tackle that with those actors. I always thought Dunst would have made a better Gwen than MJ.

Saw it today. Wow. What a disappointment. Not a horrible movie but I was expecting so much more. If the next one, and I assume there is a next one, is as bad as this one, it may be time to shelve Spiderman for a decade or so to get the horrible taste out of everyone's mouth.

I am sure it will make a ton of cash, but not as much as they would like.

Well... Sony already announced Amazing Spider-man 3 and 4... and a Sinister Six movie... and a Venom movie. If they stop making Spider-man movies they have to give it back to Marvel.

I would say it's similar to Iron Man 2 where they tried to add too many characters and set up future movies too much, making this sequel suffer for it. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone were great in their roles, but everyone else kind of sucked IMO. Probably won't make as much money as Captain America: The Winter Soldier domestically.

I liked it. The effects for electro were good, and Jamie Foxx really surprised me I thought this was going to be spiderman 3 all over again, with a ton of guys shoved in and all of them miscast. Thing is this movie built up to one scene and it just happens that scene didn't involve spiderman fighting Electro or Goblin but involved Gwen.

I love the song Electro had and the itsy bitsy Spider song electro played with spiderman.

Another thing is this movie's pacing was all over the place like it tried to tell 6 stories in the time frame of one film.

It wasn't as bad as I feared, had some very good stuff (Andrew Garfield quipping in costume as Spidey, most of the Peter+Gwen chemistry, Dane DeHaan as Harry) but I really didn't dig Electro or the pre-Electro Max Dillon, which kinda rehashed some of my least favorite aspects of Jim Carrey's fawning, pre-Riddler Edward Nygma at the beginning of Batman Forever. Also the music that played under some of his early scenes made it seem like Max Dillon goes to the place where he hears voices in his head. So yeah, a mixed bag but I think I did like it more than the last Amazing Spider-Man movie.

Also, it was probably the easiest paycheck Denis Leary has made in his life.

I think Captain America 2 and The Avengers were soo good they have made it hard for me to enjoy movies like this.

Way too much crammed in.

Spider-Man's strength always seems inconsistent as well. He can lift cop cars and city buses, yet his punches never seem to have much effect on the villains.

Isn't it universally accepted that he pulls his punches? If he didn't, he'd send thugs and robbers sky high, which goes against his no-kill policy.

This is true, but what really got me is how back and forth they are with how powerful he really is. One moment hes catching cop cars, the next it takes him half a dozen punches to take out a windshield. This doesn't just apply to the spider-man side of things either. Peter Parker's characterization is all over the board. Is he the genius we all know him to be or not? Aunt May seems to think so, but nothing in the movie really shows us how smart Peter is, or that he ever really understands the stakes involved in being a super-hero.

I always liked the fact that Rami's Peter was doing scientific things like winning the science award and interacting with other scientist. They didn't shy away from him being a nerd while the new one is going for more goth-man. Peter is smart not like Reed or Tony, but up there. He also doesn't have the super power of unlimited money and he has a stronger sense of needing to do things now instead of waiting around like Reed does or partying like Tony does.

It would have been so simple to establish his scientific mind had they just allowed him to invent the web fluid instead of "borrowing" it from Oscorp. Maybe they will focus more on the Parker brains later on in the series. Honestly Amazing 2 felt less like a sequel and more like a continuation of the origin story.

Open amazing 3 with Peter giving some type of high level science presentation at ESU and we can solve change the movies perception from not very smart Parker, to a very smart Peter Parker who simple had not had the time or drive to apply himself to science in the past.
