The deep baritone voice of AWA and WCW (and Tony the Tiger, too!) has passed on. An absolute shame he never joined WWE after the WCW buyout.

Very sad. RIP.

Also, I did not realize that he went on to become Tony the Tiger. That's pretty fantastic.

My personal claim to fame is representing Lee Marshall during the Raw episode when we discovered that Kane was alive. My 16 year-old string bean arms didn't do Stagger Lee justice.

He was the ring announcer at the LA portion of WrestleMania 2, as well.

As silly as they were, you had to appreciate his enthusiasm whenever he called in on the "Nitro Road Report". "Tony, I'm hanging here at a Nitro Party on Bourbon Street and all the people I've talked to are excited to see The Giant face Hollywood Hogan, next week on Nitro!"

RIP

And you notice you never actually saw him on-screen in any of the places he was at.

Eric used Turner's money to get a friend an easy job, and then got 1-800-COLLECT or something to pay for the spot. Probably all done from his easy chair in LA. Still, "Stagger" was a Nitro mainstay.

The fact that Bobby Heenan got all worked up every time they did one made it even better.

Bobby was probably pissed he had to show up at the arena and deal with Tony for 3 hours, then had to listen to Lee phone it in, literally.

He also read the news on 80's L.A. rap station 1580AM K-DAY, under the name "King News".

AAAAAND he appears in the opening seconds of the early 90's anti-gang violence song "We're All in the Same Gang":

That was my favorite song in junior high. I also just noticed that he literally phones that part in too!

I believe the story is he was just backstage at Nitro. There was probably some other stuff for him to do - repackaging Nitro for international markets? - but flying to a town just to do a 15 second plug must've been a really great gig at times, and a really boring one at other times.

Let us not forgot his work on the first, last and only WOW PPV.

Ken Levine (radio announcer, baseball broadcaster, sitcom writer, guy living my essential dream life) wrote a nice tribute to Marshall on his blog
