This really sounds like one big huge publicity stunt. How long has it been since he's played in the league?

Congratulations to Old Man Collins (The W) - coming out was an excellent career move. Let's see if he can nab that coveted SECOND 10-day contract!

April.

Reported says the Nets were trying to sign Glen Davis, he decided to go elsewhere, they felt they still needed a big, and Jason Kidd suggested his old teammate. Which all would be seen as completely normal if we didn't know much about Jason Collins.

Yup, already paying off:
http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/news/nba-donating-collins-jersey-sales-014829217--nba.html

The NBA plans to donate proceeds from sales of Jason Collins jerseys to the Matthew Shepard Foundation and the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network.
