Reposted on: 18.2.21 0027.44 | Like lots of other folks, I couldn't pass up the chance to catch Jimmy Fallon's debut as host of "The Tonight Show" back in New York. No real complaints - the monologue was a little light, but I think that was to be expected with the intros and anything they'd had would have been greatly overshadowed by the stacked set of walk-ons they squoze into the end of the segment. The Roots are great. U2 was U2. Will Smith was great in the skit and gave no indication of what kind of interviewer Fallon was going to be - but again, it's the first show, so it's (a) probably as expected and (b) deserving a free pass. I'm not sure he'll get me to stop watching Letterman, but I'm old.

The show was a lot like Late Night. I know Conan had to tone down The Tonight Show when he took over so I am curious to see how much Fallon will have to tone down his Tonight Show.
The Roots are awesome. And Higgins is a great sidekick (under used tonight but that was understandable). Reminds me, again, of Conan who had the Max Weinberg 7 and Andy Richter.

I'm not sure there's anything TO tone down. Conan's Late Night had a lot of zany, only-at-12:35 bits that appealed to comedy nerds, and those bits allegedly had to be removed from his act for the Tonight Show. Fallon's Late Night, however, has always been a much more mainstream type of program, so he shouldn't have had as much of a problem in keeping the older Leno audience.
It could also be that NBC realized that they screwed up Conan's Tonight Show by having him move to Burbank, change his style of comedy, etc. which is why they're letting Fallon essentially keep his exact same program, just bumped up an hour earlier. (Also, if I'm Conan, I'm even more galled by the fact that Fallon is getting a clean path to success when the deck was so stacked against Conan's Tonight Show.) | Wpob

I am not sure how some of his skits will go over in 11:30 middle America. Leno's audience was so set in their ways with their style of comedy. That is why Jimmy Kimmel was able to carve out a nice niche and the same goes for Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert. The rating numbers are with the older people and I am not sure if NBC will want to "youthen up" their Tonight Show and risk losing these people.
I liked Fallon at 12:30, and this is from someone who thought for sure he would fail there. I think I will like him a little less at 11:30 as he has to cater to a certain audience (to a degree). I don't know how a skit of him and Will Ferrell singing about tight pants will go over there.
The Tonight Show never seemed like a good gig for someone with creativity. I remember it being monologue, guests, animal people, musical act, young comedian and that was it. Safe and routine and not much deviated. For Jay Leno, it was perfect as he never struck me as a take a chance guy. For Letterman, it would have been awful. O'Brien was a square peg in a round hole. And the same, again, to me, goes for Fallon. The one difference between O'Brien and Fallon is that NBC would NEVER risk bringing Jay back so they have pretty much pushed all in with Fallon. Let's see if Fallon knows this and puts his mark on the Tonight Show or falls in line and plays it safe.
Now, as for Seth Meyers, I am hoping he does well but I don't see it. However, at 12:30 he will be given a couple of years to hone his craft before they move on. And seeing that Fallon is 39 and could realistically hist The Tonight Show for 25 years, I am guessing Meyers will eventually wind up leaving NBC due to the ceiling.
And who takes over for Letterman? If Meyers does well, would CBS poach him? I have never seen Craig Ferguson but I have heard he does not want 11:30.

ETA: Conan's median viewer age was 46.7 during his abortive Tonight Show tenure, which was just slightly younger than Jay's inaugural year median viewer age of 50.

I am drifting away from Letterman, so this may be where I end up. Mrs AWA doesn't care for Kimmell.

I love the set, even though it almost looks like it was poached from "Conan". Much more classic "Tonight Show" feel than Leno's. "The Roots" sound phenomenal.
The visual of U2 performing on the roof was spectacular. Were they doing the rooftop performances on Late Night or is that new?
Fallon himself seemed kind of generic to me, but it was a comfortable debut and I see no reason to believe he can't make this thing work. | Big Bad

Given Fallon's age, NBC fully expects him to be at 11:35 for the next 20+ years, so there's no "succession plan" as there was written into Conan's 2004 contract or in Fallon's newer deal installing him as Jay's successor. Meyers seems to be looking at having a more political bent with longer interviews on his show, making it sound like a hybrid of both the Daily Show and Weekend Update --- doesn't sound like the kind of act that would eventually translate to 11:35, though obviously, who the hell knows at this early junction.

Oh, I didn't mean to imply that there was heat between Conan and Fallon. The two have been publicly quite supportive of each other and they have SNL ties, so as far as I know, Conan is on board with Jimmy. | Kevintripod

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Jimmy Fallon's start as host of "The Tonight Show" is a ratings winner for NBC.
Nielsen company figures released Tuesday show 11.3 million people tuned in to watch Fallon's New York debut on Monday night.
It was the second-biggest audience for "Tonight" since May 2009, when Jay Leno stepped down for Conan O'Brien's brief run as host.
Fallon's "Tonight" debut fell short of the 14.6 million who tuned in Feb. 6 to see Leno sign off, again, after 22 years as host in Burbank.
Enjoying a post-Winter Olympics time slot, Fallon drew 2 million-plus viewers more than O'Brien's June 2009 "Tonight" opening audience of nearly 9.2 million.

And man, there's not that much seating for a studio audience. Conan can easily seat twice that amount. Weird that "The Tonight Show" would be boxed into such a small, uh, box.
No sizzle at all until the $100 walk-ons, which were GENIUS. Nice touch by Giuliani w/ the "thank you for bringing it back to NY" aside to Fallon.
And Colbert, of course, brings it. No way that was really 10,000 pennies in the bucket, right? That's like over 6 liters' worth!
I was surprised there was no Timberlake on night #1.
