The Observer is reporting tonight that on Monday, CM Punk told Vince McMahon he was going home. He's been removed from all upcoming advertising, and is not booked on any shows in the immediate future.

*****

My guess is he's not thrilled with his current booking, or potential Wrestlemania plans. Punk has never been pleased with storylines that don't go his way, and is never afraid to express himself so I would think we're not long from getting his side of affairs.

With all the returnees, he's bound to be overshadowed for awhile behind Big Dave, The Undertaker, Brock Lesnar, and even the ever present possibilities of Hulk Hogan and Sting. And that's before even getting into the guy who gets the fans chanting at every show - Fandango Daniel Bryan.

Either way, he's pretty much my favorite thing going week in and week out, despite the fact I get the feeling he's a bit of a real life priss - so I'll be disappointed if this is an extended hiatus.

His body is pretty much in tatters. He needs the time off, so if he feels he needs to go home, more power to him.

Having said that...his body is pretty much in tatters...and it has been for well over six months. Why did The E think it was a good idea to have him work nearly an hour in the Rumble match and then have him take a table bump on top of it? And all that for a feud with KANE? As much as I hate to see him go, I really can't blame him for taking a walk if that was the breaking point.

What the heck? They were pre-selling the VIP autographs with CM Punk for Wrestlemania Axxess for $108. Had I decided to purchased that, I would be so pissed right now.

It's not a feud with Kane, it's a feud with the Authority.

I'm surprised by how little I've reacted to this. Guy's heart's not been in it for months now, and it's written all over his face every time he goes out there. If this is what he needs to rediscover his love of the biz, to come back in six months or a year or whatever and do that one last extended run and hang up his boots, then so be it. Was anyone really excited for the prospect of him taking on HHH anyway?

One other thing: this can only be good for Daniel Bryan. Losing the other surefire pop-the-crowd babyface right before their biggest few months in the company's history makes it that much dumber to try and fart about with his position on the card. He's getting either the title or a victory over HHH at Mania. And then likely the other of those two four weeks later in his hometown at Extreme Rules.

This is why I was hoping for a feud between Austin and Punk. They are opposite, yet so similar.

The Undertaker/Punk match at WM last year was a real show-stealer, and anything he did/does this year will have a hard time topping that match.

I wonder if Punk looked at the situation with Daniel Bryan and just said "Screw it."

Am I painting him as too altruistic? He constantly goes to bat for Cabana, and Danielson is orders of magnitude better than Colt, in the ring and out.

If the story, as it's being reported, is true, then I, for one, look forward to Hunter's speech about how Punk took his ball and went home.

I agree, it might have to do with him not getting the last match at Mania, but not with Daniel Bryan. I could see him taking a backseat for Bryan (Punk sees and hears the reactions Bryan is getting, and he knows that Bryan would be deserving of the main event spot), but for Bootista? After two years of taking a backseat for The Rock?

Punk's only remaining goal in wrestling is to main event Wrestlemania.

I'm sure part of his reasoning is that in order to main event Wrestlemania lately you have to leave the company for a few years and come back as a part timer with a big contract.

Nobody's a little bit skeptical? I had thought the original news out of Monday was that they did massive rewrites of the show (as usual) and intentionally decided to move the Kane/Punk follow-up to next week.

I had thought the original news out of Monday was that they did massive rewrites of the show (as usual) and intentionally decided to move the Kane/Punk follow-up to next week

The later reports on the rewrites suggested Punk was supposed was supposed to be in an Elimination Chamber match (and seemingly win?), so his departure might have caused the rewrites.

Punk's contract runs out in July and there had recently been chatter about him retiring or at least taking a break. No one actually does that at his age, but Punk does do stuff no one else actually does. (And his contract running out in July means he's not showing up anywhere else until July. Though I hope he's gone somewhere warm and not to his Chicago apartment.)

We don't know a lot of things, but we don't know all was rewritten. If that opening segment was planned all along, they were now hinting towards HHH vs Bryan, which would've left Punk to face Sheamus or Kane or who knows at WrestleMania. That's something he would've only found out about Monday and something he might be very upset over. But who knows.

I think there's a chance you're still right, Dr Unlikely. It does say something - a lot of something! - about the quality and location of these sources that they knew about rewrites and not about one of the top guys in the company walking out for two days. And while everyone has their theories, no one really knows what he's thinking. All we've got is mysterious Twitter messages. And probably only the ones he's already posted, because he's going to disappear.

The view never changes...if you're not leading the pack.

https://twitter.com/CMPunk/status/427847883774103552

Sounds like a farewell (for now) bit.

(On the other hand, as former poster @backofthehead pointed out, Punk should just sit out for about 11 months and come back as the returning legend, since it'll give him a better shot at main eventing WM than sticking around.)

One of those internet retirements.

CM Punk hasn't seemed engaged. His wrestling still holds up, but he's been drifting character wise since the Heyman feud. He really should be a heel, but the company is loaded in that department these days. I'm fine with him taking a break, but I selfishly would have rather he wait until after Mania.

Punk gets a lot of leeway with me, and the WWE can't be surprised when Punk acts like Punk. But there's only so many times you can threaten to walk out and expect the company to bend.

Let's say he was going to get Hunter at Mania. That angle didn't go well for him last time. He got Nashed. He was most recently used to put over the NAO to give them credibility before they took the titles. Putting over Hunter's running buddies for a potential Kane match is a bag of nothing.

And does anyone think Kane could beat Punk at Mania? They've fought for years. Kane's eaten more G2Ss than Cena. It's old hat.

There's potentially no advancement here for him after two months of build going into Mania.

Maybe someone else can move up to face the Authority/Kane. Big E, Dolph, Kofi, etc. Some good can come of this.
