My wife and I got a rare night out over the holidays so her call was to see The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, which I thought would be as painful as every other Ben Stiller movie I've seen (save Tropic Thunder).

Boy, was I wrong. I expected an awkward comedy, but both Stiller and Kristin Wiig played their roles straight and despite the fantasy sequences, they did great jobs. Ben Stiller was the least "Ben Stiller" ever in a role, and Wiig is quite beautiful (something I had failed to notice on SNL).

The movie's scenery in Iceland is shot beautifully, and the soundtrack works great. The tone of the movie is very obvious with its "You should be INSPIRED by this movie!" message, but it's really quite enjoyable.

Other notes:
-Adam Scott looks ridiculous with a beard, but I guess that's intentional.
-Patton Oswalt is fantastic as Todd, the eHarmony.com employee trying to help Walter with his profile.

At times (especially during the soccer scene) I felt like they were beating you over the head with the "THIS IS MAGICAL" baton.

Then the reveal of the last cover and BAM, it was a little dusty in the theater.

Great flick.
I admit I was hoping Stiller would finally pull a serious dramatic role out of his ass, and he did so without looking ridiculous doing it. Kristin Wiig was great too.
Even Sean Penn was tolerable.
I'd recommend it.

I loved this movie, and I am not a fan of Ben stiller at all. I took my 15 year old son and 14 year old daughter and they loved it too.

The end got me. I did not see that coming and definitely welled up a little. It is a positive movie about living life and taking chances.

The supporting cast was great. Wiig and Penn were really good and I am not a fan of either of them. Patton Oswald was awesome. I could not place the voice all movie - thought it was Andy Richter - so it was great to put the face with the voice. Shirley McClaine was great too, and was another actor I am not a fan of. The reason I liked the acting is that it was all underplayed. Everyone seemed like normal everyday people. There was no big emotional scene with overacting or reaching for that "award scene". The movie and its message were the stars here. And kudos to all involved for pulling that first.

I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to see a movie you can walk out of feeling good. As someone who works in the news industry and hears all the bad things that go one throughout the world, this was an awesome palate cleaner.

I correctly guessed where the negative was immediately, which may have put a damper on my opinion of the rest of the movie. Not to mention thinking too much about stuff like the amazing remote places where Mitty had cell signal.

Still worth a watch, but...
