Source: Jacoby Ellsbury, Yanks agree
Free-agent outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury has reached agreement on a seven-year contract with the New York Yankees pending a physical exam, a baseball source told ESPN.com.
The source confirmed a CBSSports.com report that Ellsbury's deal exceeds Carl Crawford's seven-year, $142 million contract with the Boston Red Sox in December 2010.
Also, add another degree of spice to the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry, as the Yanks sign away another beloved Red Sox player. At this rate, the Yankees will field Derek Jeter, A-Rod and half the '04 Red Sox roster.
And going back to Cano...Jay-Z isn't really so good at this "agent" thing, is he?

And then they turn around and give nearly that much to Ellsbury? Looks like the Yanks were just trying to play hardball with Cano, who is clearly worth a helluva lot more than an oft-injured center fielder with only two really good years to his name. The Ellsbury deal is going to look really bad when he loses his speed in two years or so.
Cano will still get his $200 million, it'll just be from the Nationals or a dark-horse team like Seattle or Toronto. | BigDaddyLoco

Baseball is nuts. They won't be able to sustain this kind of craziness. Tough to blame anyone but the owners though.

So, let's see...
Ellsbury played 520 games for the Yankees over the next four years, earning 9.7 WAR.
Granderson played 573 games for the Mets over the next not-quite four years, earning 10.9 WAR before being traded to the Dodgers for the 2017 stretch drive. (They got Jacob Rhame, a relief pitcher who was pretty bad in his limited major league work.)
