‘Star Wars: Episode VII’: J.J. Abrams, Lawrence Kasdan to pen script
J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan are taking over screenwriting duties on the newest “Star Wars” film from Oscar winner Michael Arndt, according to a statement issued today.
Abrams was tapped to direct “Star Wars: Episode VII” back in January; Kasdan, of course, has a long history with Lucasfilm, as a screenwriter on “Star Wars: Episode V — The Empire Strikes Back,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of the Jedi.”
“I am very excited about the story we have in place and thrilled to have Larry and J.J. working on the script,” Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement posted on StarWars.com. “There are very few people who fundamentally understand the way a ‘Star Wars’ story works like Larry, and it is nothing short of incredible to have him even more deeply involved in its return to the big screen. J.J. of course is an incredible storyteller in his own right. Michael Arndt has done a terrific job bringing us to this point and we have an amazing filmmaking and design team in place already prepping for production.”
Arndt (“Little Miss Sunshine,” “Toy Story 3″) had been announced as the original screenwriter for “Episode VII” last November, shortly after word surfaced that he had written a lengthy treatment for a trilogy of new “Star Wars” films.

There's that wide-eyed optimism we've all come to know and love.
Me, I think it's still way, way too soon to come out either feverishly anticipating or dreading these sequels. Things are kept under a tight wrap - and with JJ Abrams and his "Magic Box" way of keeping secrets, there'll be lies and denials up and down the line of anything leaked. ("Is he Khan?" "He is not Khan." Oh, wait, he's Khan. Surprise!)
There's stuff I would love to see in a new Star Wars (more than one woman per movie would be a nice start.) But we'll see.

Agreed on Orci and Kurtzman. Their "paint by numbers" fanboy beats killed the last Star Trek movie for me and their writing is just so lifeless.
I like the idea of Kasdan and the director writing the script moreso than the writer of Little Miss Sunshine. Arndt is a very capable writer, and a better choice than Abrams' usual writing teams, but I trust someone who was in the trenches writing with Lucas during the prime years of Star Wars and Indy the most.
I do have a bad feeling about these new movies, but I think the prequels proved that there were really only three Star Wars movies the culture really cared about that were made between 1977-1983 and that Star Wars really was its own era in entertainment. Everything since then has been more about capitalizing on the original source material than building something new.
Abrams' first Star Trek movie, and the fact that this is a sequel that will likely have the original cast, gives me some hope, but the biggest red flag of all is the 2015 release date. No way they make that, and if they do, it'll be horribly rushed. | Mike Zeidler

Well, it's going to be really special effects-heavy, so they'll need the remaining time to get that sorted out, do any re-shoots, handle the editing, and do the necessary marketing and promotion. It'd be pretty worrisome, actually, if they hadn't wrapped principle photography at this point. 2015 for a Star Wars film that doesn't even have a finished script at this point is not likely, although 2016 is doable depending on how fast they can get pre-production taken care of. 2017 is probably the safer, more likely bet. | lotjx

I was in line for an hour for the midnight release of Episode III and I had a ticket with a reversed seat. As I have had for every Star Wars film even the re-releases back in the 90s. Its going to happen. My major grip is Star Wars is one of the first summer blockbusters behind Jaws and moving it to December seems to me that Disney is missing the stuff that makes Star Wars special. I mean the last Star Wars holiday event did not go well. | CRZ

If anything, this seems like a shot at Universal's Warcraft movie set to open the same day. I'd expect that'll get moved cuz I don't see how ep VII doesn't curbstomp it.
ETA: Just for clarification, I'm counting Star Wars as a fantasy movie. I see no problems with the 12-18 date.

Yeah, what's the problem?
It's not written in the stars that Star Wars has to be released in May. The first Superman Movie opened on Christmas back in the 70s and that did pretty well, I hear.
Think of it as an all new Star Wars Christmas Special. Er, or maybe you shouldn't.
Also, Star Wars will release on the Greatest Wrestling Birthday, December 18: birthdays of Stone Cold Steve Austin, Rob Van Dam, and Trish Stratus.

Disney also has Avengers: Age of Ultron scheduled for Summer 2015. I'm guessing they don't want to step on themselves. | Moss
