Yeah, you kinda figured that this season was going to end this way.

MRI scheduled to confirm Kobe injury

LOS ANGELES -- Standing on crutches in front of his locker with his sweaty game uniform on his back and tears in his eyes, Kobe Bryant confirmed the worst news to hit the Los Angeles Lakers in a season already full of heartbreaking disappointments.

Bryant said he suffered a torn Achilles tendon in his left leg in the fourth quarter of the Lakers' 118-116 win over the Golden State Warriors on Friday, putting an end to his season no matter how far L.A. advances in the playoffs should it qualify.

They weren't going to make a lot of noise in the first round, but it still sucks.

And if Kobe can't play and Dwight decides to bolt somewhere else in the offseason, it could be the end of the Lakers.

Now, do they amnesty him if he cannot play until midseason or just eat the giant tax hit carrying him will bring?

Kobe's surgery leaves him out 6-9 months, meaning he'll likely be ready for next season. But the question of...

Tom Ziller of SBNation points out that amnestying Kobe means that they won't have Kobe's bird rights and thus could only sign in him in 2014 for a mid-level exception, so there's zero shot at a wink-wink amnesty where Kobe takes off 2014 to rest and collect cheques (not that Kobe of all people would do that). So the real question regarding amnesty is whether the Lakers take this as an opportunity to move on and rebuild. I can't help but be reminded Peyton Manning and the Colts, except if the Colts didn't have the #1 pick.
