Via Nintendo (nintendo.com):

    Shutdown of Wii Channels

    2013-04-12

We at Nintendo sincerely thank you for your continued patronage of our company’s products. We would like to inform you that a portion of the network services offered through the Wii console will be discontinued starting June 28, 2013.

We apologize to those of you currently using these services, and ask for your understanding. The affected applications are as follows:

    • Forecast Channel
    • News Channel
    • Everybody Votes Channel
    • Nintendo Channel
    • Check Mii Out Channel
    • Data exchange between Wii friends on WiiConnect24*

*Wii message exchanges via Wii Message Board, Mii exchanges via Mii Channel, and exchanges of messages or data in some game titles will no longer be possible.

Following the discontinuation, the above services will not be available even if they are started up on the Wii menu. However, services other than those mentioned above, such as the automatic receipt of “Today’s Accomplishments” on the Wii Message Board and the Wii Shop Channel are unaffected and can continue to be used.
I would really miss this if I had used the Wii at all in the past...two years? Kim's pretty much converted it to a NetFlix-only device and I can't think of the last time we played a game on it (which really makes the Wii Fit "Last used: over 1 week ago" notice comically understated)

Still....is anyone going to mourn these channels after they disappear?

Maybe I better update my Mii one more time before 6/28. Eh.... I probably don't look much different.

My system has sat dormant for most of the last four years, but my son (who's now 3 1/2) has just started discovering Wii games thanks to his cousins.

I almost never used any of those channels. I'm thinking it might be a good idea to grab whatever Virtual Console games I want, in case that goes away next.

Does the Wii U have any comparable functionality? I feel like the Forecast and News channels would be better suited to the tablet controller. (Then again, everyone pretty much has a tablet that they just use for all that, making those functions on a game console redundant.)

I liked Everybody Votes. I'd say I'll miss it but I haven't checked it out in close to 4 years.

The Nintendo Channel was their in-house promotional channel, right? I can see that not getting a large amount of play, but it seems odd that they'd stop that. It was still a good ay to keep people abreast of new releases.

I made a Mii of my friend Rob and submitted him for a number of Check Mii Out competitions. This was great fun (if only to me and my wife) but yeah, I can't remember the last time I used that channel. Or any of those channels. Or played any game on the Wii. The News and Forecast Channels seemed especially pointless, unless you wanted to know what was happening in the world six hours ago.

Maybe? I honestly don't know. Probably. We really should stop giving Comcast so much money.

I've lived in my house for almost three years now, and I'm not sure I've turned it on more than twice in that time.

Our Wii is dormant upstairs. The PS3 is used for Netflix, Hulu Plus, and a Jetpack game. Oh, and MLB.tv.

I use the Xbox in the bedroom, but none of the cool stuff works on it since I'm no longer Gold. I played some Marvel game on it last month.

I guess I can't really say I'm going to miss the Wii channels.

I liked the idea of the Weather and News channels, and used them when I played my Wii regularly.

It doesn't get much play right now, but with Pandora's Tower being released this week it will get some dust knocked off of it soon!!

I never even looked at most of those channels. We still play some Wii games on the Wii U, my son gets into different ones from time to time.

Lego City Undercover has brought me back to the world of Wii a lot more of late.
