I'm anxious to see who was elected, and what direction he takes the church. Promote this thread! | | AWArulz

| #3 Posted on 13.3.13 1709.26 Reposted on: 13.3.20 1711.35 | Pluses:
1) First Pope from the Americas
2) First Pope named Francis
3) St. Francis of Assisi is my favourite saint (Christopher is in 2nd place.) Patron saint of animals & the environment. First person to put together a Christmas manger scene. First person to show stigmata.
4) RIDES THE BUS TO WORK
5) "Catholics are still buzzing over his speech last year accusing fellow church officials of hypocrisy for forgetting that Jesus Christ bathed lepers and ate with prostitutes."
6) "Before Easter in 1999, about a year after being name(d) archbishop, Bergoglio washed the feet of 12 AIDS patients in a Buenos Aires hospital and the following year washed the feet of 12 prison inmates. He’s done the same thing every year since with members of different social groupings."
In the Middle:
First Jesuit Pope
Minuses:
1) Conservative.
2) Organized marches against same-sex marriages being made legal in Argentina.
3) Hid Political Prisoners FOR THE ARGENTINIAN JUNTA (specifically the Navy) IN HIS SUMMER HOME (called El Silencio) from International Human Rights organizations. http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/belief/2011/jan/04/argenitina-videla-bergoglio-repentance

#3 is a deal breaker for me. I suppose it is possible that the reason that he gave away his homes to take a small apartment and dismiss his limo & driver to travel by bus is a form of atonement for his actions during those times, but since he has never spoken publicly about what part the Catholic Church played in the 30,000+ deaths that the Junta was responsible for, including his colleague Enrique Angelelli, it is impossible to know. At a minimum the church was willfully blind. | lotjx
