Two things are for sure: this show aired and I watched it.

I liked the "Sweet Smell of Success" flashback and definitely liked the Khlav Kalash Kallback.

But neither the "A" or "B" story was terribly exciting for me, and definitely not worthy of the high expectations I get from a "Season Premiere."

And a couch gag contest? Oh Lordy.

In the parade of Bart's ex girlfriends, they brought back the characters and the actresses who played them: Anne Hathaway, Natalie Portman, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Sarah Silverman (man, Bart did well for himself). Plus Zooey Deschanel. But no Jessica Lovejoy? I still have a crush on Jessica Lovejoy. Her hair smelled like red fruit loops.

Also, laughs free episode.

It's a testament (or indictment) to how long this show has been on, because I didn't recognize the first two at all. This was probably the highlight of the episode, which isn't saying much. This episode felt like an excuse to give Zooey Deschanel an acoustic guitar number.

As much as I appreciated the Khlov Kalash callback, all it did was remind me of how much of a superior episode "The State of New York vs. Homer Simpson" was.

Bart: Dad, can I ask you a question? How did you ever get a woman like Mom to stay with you?
Homer: Pssh, look in the mirror, Unplanned Miracle.

(Wow...even the quotes were uninspiring.)

That "Dad, your two least-favourite buildings have now been destroyed" bit is your new front-runner for darkest joke in Simpsons history.

I didn't even recognize Mary Spuckler and she was the basis of the entire episode.

Holy smokes, I totally forgot about that line! The thing is, if you think back to that original Twin Towers bit from "The State of New York vs. Homer Simpson," then this is actually a pretty clever line. It's just...I don't know.........too soon?

I've watched every episode of 23 seasons of the Simpsons, and I'm finally done with them. What did it? The couch gag contest. "We're totally out of ideas. What have you got?" Man, just call it quits already. It didn't help that they dropped it on top of this totally uninspired episode. I mean, it's not like this was the worst episode ever or anything, but it was just there, and that's been the case for so many episodes for a long time. I'm not mad - really, how can you have a consistently high standard of quality for over two decades, especially when the early seasons were so good? But I don't think there's anything left for me here.

Not even too soon. Just plain flat-out tasteless. I know, as a New Yorker I might be more inclined to take this personally than most people (although of course people who actually lost a loved one would be even more so inclined), but I don't think that joke would be funny to me even if the event had happened long ago and far away.

Did anyone catch the sign that said that Rockefeller Center was now "U-Store-It Formally NBC Network Center" or something like that? The basic joke is obvious, but is there a reason they wrote "Formally" rather than "Formerly", or do they actually not know the difference? Because if I'm not missing something, that's embarrassing.

Last season was better than the preceding few, although certainly nowhere near their heyday. This one felt like the nadir of the previous ones. The WTC joke was just the culmination of a bunch of tastelessness.
