Could be step one to the triumphant return of the Sonics.

Arena deal to get council scrutiny; Sodo businesses remain worried

Three die-hard Sonics fans in the front row of a packed news conference Wednesday left no doubt of their feelings on the announcement of an agreement between the city, county and private investor Chris Hansen to build a $490 million sports arena, bring back professional basketball and attract a National Hockey League team to Seattle.

"We're here to party!" said one, waving a Sonics flag.

Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn and King County County Executive Dow Constantine announced that they were sending to their respective councils a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Hansen under which Seattle would contribute $120 million and the county $80 million toward construction of the arena. They highlighted protections for taxpayers, including a 30-year, non-relocation clause for both teams.

There are obviously still some legal hurdles to jump through, but at least the city of Seattle is trying to get the Sonics back into the NBA.

Stern obviously won't offer up an expansion, but I'm pretty sure Charlotte would be more than happy to give up their basketball team right about now.

The catch is they won't break ground on the area until they have a commitment for a team. *looks over at the Maloof brothers*
