Good news for Conan O'Brien, staff and fans: TBS has renewed Conan through April 2014. (deadline.com) TBS has worked out remarkably well for him overall, and vice versa. Plus they'll start doing more special events like the New York week last November; they're going to Chicago in June.

Congrats to Conan, Andy, and Team Coco on their job security!

I kept hearing throughout the past year that Conan's ratings were down and all that junk, but nobody wanted to point out that TBS wasn't exactly looking for a ratings bonanza to begin with. They were looking for a face for their network and an identity and Conan's giving them just that.

I second the congrats and I look forward to his return to New York, because that may have been his best weeks of shows since the final week of the Tonight Show.

Although I know people have been down on the TBS show overall, I'm still watching it nightly, at least into the first guest, so...yeah. Good to hear.

After watching Letterman for the first time in about 8 years (to see the amazing Butch Walker perform) I realized he needs to hang it up. How great would it be for Conan to take Dave's place and kick the shit out of Leno.

I thought about that too, but isnt Craig Furgeson being groomed for that spot? Or am I just assuming that because Craig's show is produced (and owned?) by Dave's production company?

I feel like you may not regularly watch Craig's show. I think he's perfectly happy at 12:37 (although some nights you get the sense he's very weary of doing the show at all and wonder if he'll sign his next extension) AND not only wouldn't he be a good fit at 11:35 but he's VERY aware he wouldn't be a good fit at 11:35 and constantly reminds his audience.

...in the best way, of course! I seriously love his show.

Geez, it would put a nice bow on the situation to have Conan follow in Dave's footsteps on CBS, but he'd probably find himself losing to Leno in the ratings again, thus "proving" NBC's point.

We're also entering, if we haven't already, a new generation of late-night TV where the average talk show setup is not the golden job. Jon Stewart has been rumored to be Letterman's replacement for a while, but that talk has died down as the Daily Show itself has grown into a pop culture icon unto itself and it seems to fit Stewart perfectly. Why would he leave the Daily Show for a whole new animal of show? Why would Ferguson take on Letterman's place when, as CRZ mentioned, he's doing his own thing at 12:37?

Conan's own awkward adjustment to the Tonight Show would also probably give these guys pause about jumping into a new situation.

Now this is just me, but I personally take the plummet of O'Brien's not as evidence that he's a flop by TBS' standards, but as evidence to reinforce my opinion that he's just not very funny or entertaining. Last time I was aware of his ratings, he had lost well over half his viewers since debuting on TBS. TBS may be happy with that, good for them, but it's still obvious to me that O'Brien just doesn't have the widespread appeal many of his fans attribute to him. He has tons of fans, except for when he's on television or trying to be entertaining.

You can love him, and that's fine; I'm not trying to change your mind. But numbers tell me you're in the minority.

How gregarious. Thank you, statistical spokesman for the rest of humanity, for allowing us, his fans, to continue to love Conan even though he's not very funny.

No no, see, you're confused. The ratings themselves are the "statistical spokesman" (whatever that is). Conan has lost more than half his viewers since going to TBS whether you hear it from me or someone else (and I assume you already actually knew that).

And if you'd rather I pretend that nobody likes Conan O'Brien, I can try. But I think it's pretty obvious what I'm meant was that the predictable responses of, "But *I* like Conan O'Brien!!!!" don't actually change the fact that Conan O'Brien's show is by no measurement popular.

EDIT: "By no measurement popular" is of course an exaggeration. The point is, he's not as popular as his contemporaries in the late night talk show field.

Can we agree he was more popular than George Lopez?

I admit that I'm one of those viewers that quit watching Conan.

I thought he was hilarious when he was on NBC and watched him constantly. But once he was on TBS, he just seemed to be not nearly as funny. I don't know what happened. And his weaker guest list didn't help either.

Conan seemed to get his mojo back after the trip to New York, and his shows over the last couple of months have been fine. Frankly, his entire run has been fine except for a couple of really poor months over the summer, which is when the ratings seemed to have also cratered. Guy can't be blamed for having a slump.

Re: the lower ratings. As has been noted many times before, Conan's younger fanbase is much more likely to watch the show online, DVR it, or some other way of seeing the program that doesn't involve actually watching it on broadcast television.

Same here, minus the "watched him constantly on NBC" part. I watched every TBS show for months before I finally threw in the towel. The guest interviews were boring and the sketches were lame (and when he did hit on something funny, he'd beat it into the ground seemingly every single night). I replaced Conan on the DVR with Daily Show and Colbert and never regretted it.

Yeah, that was when I gave up. Maybe I'll check the show out again if he's turned it around, but I'm bailing at the first sign of Fan Corrections.

My practice is I DVR Conan and watch the show in the mornings with coffee and breakfast before work. This works out great for me. Get a few laughs in with Conan and Andy, some silliness, occasionally a guest I'm interested in, and Conan tends to give a day a nice upbeat start.

I find the main complaint I hear repeatedly about the TBS show is that it's too similar to The Tonight Show. The Tonight Show was a letdown to many of the hardcore Conan fans I know because it didn't have the free-wheeling, bizarre, envelope pushing silliness of the old Late Night show. Conan on TBS is still in the 11pm hour "lamer" Tonight Show mold, but at this point in his career, this is the show Conan wants to do.

What I'm looking for from Conan is some laughs and goofy fun. Do I watch every minute of every episode? No. Late night shows like Conan are meant to be disposable comedy. I'm biased, but Conan is "my Johnny Carson", and I love the guy and his show.

Agreed. The show has gotten very "standard talk show"-ish since he left Late Night. I almost feel like Jimmy Fallon has out-Conan'd Conan, what with all the weird goofiness and whatnot.

I DVR Conan every night, but I almost never watch them anymore. And when I do, I usually dont make it very far. It hurts my heart to type that

Which reminds me: I hate Leno but he kept having guests on that I like so I started DVRing his shows maybe a month ago, then I'd watch only the segments with guests I want to hear from (almost never). He had The Rock on a couple weeks ago so I watched that one. Leno was his usual annoyingly unfunny self, and Rock came off pretty UNentertaining too. I blame Leno for that, of course. And now that you've reminded me, I'm taking Leno off my DVR schedule when I get home.

Specifically, CARSON'S "Tonight Show". It's more "Tonight Show" than Leno's show has ever been.

And that's one of the things that brought me back to late night television.
