Hall of Fame catcher Carter dead at 57. (espn.go.com)

Brain cancer. My first "favorite" ballplayer. This sucks.

Growing up and playing catcher in Little League, he was a hero of mine. Always seemed to be able to get the hit when it mattered, and always seemed like he was in control of the game. 57 is too damn young. RIP Mr Carter.

One of my favorite players and easily one of the greatest catchers ever. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family. Hearing Keith Hernandez crying on he air was heartbreaking.

I vividly remember learning of the trade that brought Carter to my Mets. I was in my dorm room. I immediately leapt up and said "We're going to the World Series!" It took only two years for that to come true. I knew he was that good.

Everything I've heard suggests that he was as good a guy as you'll meet--someone who really loved the game and always treated people well, from his teammates to the fans. What a loss for his family and loved ones, and for everyone.

He was definitely one of the all time greatest Mets, even if he was on the team for a short period of time. The 86' team was a loaded one, but they owe so much to him and him alone in getting there. RIP.

The first player to go into the Hall of Fame as a Montreal Expo. What a fantastic player and man. Brings back so many memories of growing up as an Expo fan.

It's too bad that a man like him has to die for us to hear just how fantastic he was. So many great comments from Andre Dawson, Tim Raines, Dwight Gooden, Ron Darling, just to mention a few.

You are in a very, very good place now Gary, enjoy yourself!
