Geez, when the Marlins said they wanted to spend this winter, they weren't kidding. This could be like the mid-1990's Indians all over again --- team moves into a new ballpark and becomes a contender.

And, there are also rumours Miami is going after Mark Buehrle, C.J. Wilson and even Albert Pujols. Good lord!

I wish the Wilpons would sell the fucking team already. They have been terrible owners for thirty years and now they have no money and can't even repay loans from the mlb yet their good buddy Selig is protecting them and doing everything he can do to help them. Poor Alderson. Man will I miss Reyes. He is one of the best players in franchise history. Today is like Seaver getting traded or like when Strawberry left as a free agent.

I read a tweet earlier pointing out that this is already more than the Marlins have spent in free agency over the last nine offseasons combined!

It's so weird to see this from the Marlins, of all teams.

Also, the s.e.c. is investigating the marlins stadium.

Not sure what they can do, since its already built.

Fines for luria and the dirty.politicans, most of whom have already been voted out of officw.

Graves9 pretty much said it for me. I still don't get why if they knew they weren't going to come close to signing Reyes, why didn't they trade him for something more than the one lousy draft pick they're getting as compensation? And how can you claim not to be a terrible owner if you're forced to apply a Pittsburgh-type payroll in NYC?

The Wilpons need to go. I still say that the Madoff mess is worse than they'll ever admit and until they do, the team will be stuck on neutral for years to come. I even think a argument could be made that we're in worse off shape than the Dodgers. At least they're seeing some light at the end of their tunnel.

I wouldn't pay Reyes the kind of money for that long of a time that he is going to get in Miami, but if the Mets weren't such a toxic environment they might not have had to.

The only reason the Wilpons get away with this is because they are buds with Bud. Citi Field is a nice place to watch a game too, but I'm not shelling out $40 or more plus $20 for parking and $8 a beer to watch Triple A baseball. Even if last year was more or less a Triple A team you at least stayed tuned for the Reyes moments.

This is mind boggling. They didn't want to look broke during the season is my guess, well have fun with season ticket sales now guys.

This is a mess. There is no money, no stars coming up on the farm and the worst part is there is no plan.

Force these clowns to sell before the Madoff settlement happens and save MLB the embarrassment.

EDIT: Just saw this on Twitter

Sandy Alderson said #Mets have about $20-$25M to spend this offseason, but he's including Pelfrey and Pagan, who get about $10M combined.

I'm just happy the Marlins are relevant in the off-season for once, and I don't just have to hibernate until February. Reyes was my #1 hope that the Marlins got this winter, even above Pujols, Buehrle, and CJ Wilson. Ramirez now expected to move to 3B.

As for Bell, I generally don't like paying that much for relievers (then again, it's not my money...) but he's always been a favorite of Loria to the point that his name has been connected to the Marlins at the trade deadline for what seems like the last three or four years.

It's not only the Madoff lawsuits but it's their real estate loses the fact that they have a ton of debt and they also the fact that the team claims to have lost seventy million dollars in 2011. Another issue is albatross contracts like Bay's and Santana's As far as the Mets having no prospects I disagree with that. The farm system has improved since Sandy has taken over and have two elite pitching prospects in Wheeler and Harvey and two very good pitching prospects in Mejia and Familia. They also have Nimmo who everyone is high on as well as guys like Flores, Valdespin, and Havens. Sandy was a great hire now if only he had good owners that would have no financial constraints.

As much as I will always treasure the memories of Jose Reyes, wonder what might have been, and keep the "Joooose, Jose Jose Jose" chant going in my head, I'm not sure it would have been smart to re-sign him. Obviously he's had a lot of injury problems, and if that slows him down that's a big part of his game. Moreover, Tejada seems ready to be a perfectly serviceable SS, which means they could find a comparable offensive player at another position, like 2B or the outfield, and pay him less. Or, for that matter, they could go get a pitcher, which is probably a bigger need.

Of course, there's no way they're actually going to spend that money this season, and while I might be OK with them waiting a season, something needs to drastically change before they spend that kind of money in the future. *sigh*.

Loco, don't spend $20 on parking! Park in downtown Flushing, eat at one of the great Asian restaurants there, and then take the subway. You can park on the street for free (at least for night and Sunday games). The Lovely Future Mrs. Hegemon suggested that when we went to game 6 against the Cardinals in 2006, and it was a major positive. Sorry, can't help you with the ticket prices. B^)
