Ron Santo passed away last night in Arizona at the age of 70. Being a lifelong Cubs fan, he was my favorite player as I grew up, and played 3rd base because of him. It was strange to hear about this and then look up to see my autographed picture of Santo that is above my desk at home. While I didn't get a chance to hear him as an announcer much since I live in Arizona, I was always amused when I heard clips of him calling games, or as it is better put, reacting to games as a Cubs fan would, just with a microphone in front of him.

If you have never seen the documentary, "This Old Cub", check it out sometime. It was made by his son, and chronicles his life as he lost both his lower legs to Diabetes (which he played with throughout his career).

I know there have been debates about whether he belongs in the Hall of Fame or not (and I certainly do), he will always be a Hall of Famer to me. When he died, a bit of my childhood died with him.

R.I.P Ron.

I certainly enjoyed listening to him. He was pretty goofy but made a good team with Pat Hughes. I'm not qualified to say if should be in the Hall of Fame, but he lived a great life and I just hope he was content when we died.

This is probably the best way I've heard him described. His timely 'Aw geez!' and 'Yeah!'s were as honest and reactive as you could get. And we was never embarrassed to announce with his mouth full of hotdog.

Ron Santo might be the best player not in the Hall.

Plus, he seemed a heck of a guy.

One of the worst Toupees in the world though.

I am sure Ronnie is clicking his heels in heaven right now though.

Goodbye Ron, you'll be missed. Say hi to Jack and Harry for us.

Bleed Cubbie Blue commenters are encouraging people to donate $10 to the Juvenile Diabetes Relief Fund in his honor. I hope they make a mint today.

I would say Dick Allen is that guy. In both cases, they seem to be people kept out because of personality, rather than performance, issues.

of course, in actuality, it's Pete Rose. But he's out for another reason.

If Rose counts, then it's Shoeless Joe Jackson.
