Stop me if you've heard this one before...

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden will have microfracture surgery on his left knee and will not play this season.

Oden has not played since last December because he needed surgery to repair a fractured left patella.

The Blazers say that the microfracture surgery will repair damaged cartilage and is unrelated to the patella injury.

I feel terrible for the guy. He's gotta be done, right?

SI.com's making the obvious comparison to Sam Bowie. Which is all the more striking considering that Kevin Durant, selected right after him (as Michael Jordan was selected right after Bowie) already has a scoring title under his belt.

(Apparently, there was no Hakeem Olajuwon.)

Yeah, his career is finished as Portland did not extend Oden's contract (no surprise there). But it is a shame considering the time he played last season, he averaged about 11 ppg and 8 boards to go along with 2.5 bpg.

Now the question is not if he is the second coming of Sam Bowie but whether or not if Greg Oden can be considered a bust now....

It's a shame, I'm hoping he can have some kind of career in the NBA, but it's not looking good.

I agree with Adande on ESPN.com who mentioned that maybe in a different city with a different training staff he might be able to become at least a solid role player in the league. Click Here (sports.espn.go.com)

I know the Phoenix medical staff single-handedly resurrected Grant Hill's career and turned Shaq into an 82-game player, but if they can restore Greg Oden, I'll trust those guys to cure cancer.

Any doubt the Clippers decide to make a big splash in free agency and sign Oden? Or, if he returns from exile, Isiah with the Knicks to fill Eddy Curry's slot?

It seems to me those two actions are mutually exclusive.
