With all his success, Joe remains as grounded as he was a decade ago at our first meeting in Little Rock. His priorities are his family, his friends and his game. Joe could have forced a sign-and-trade deal for five years with another team, but he decided that winning in Atlanta would be more meaningful. When the Hawks offered the maximum -- six years -- he happily reciprocated.
For his next act, Joe plans to actively recruit other top free agents to Atlanta, a place not unlike his hometown, where he feels comfortable and appreciated.
LeBron, you've already met with the front offices of six teams. How about considering the Hawks?
Oh yeah, because LeBron's more than willing to take less money than Joe freakin' Johnson. And it's not like Joe Johnson has ever been motivated by MONEY. Perish the thought.
Remember kids, if you carry yourself off like a major star, show absolutely no heart in a playoff series where your team gets swept by more than 20 points a game, and you trash your city's fans, YOU TOO can make over $100 million.

From what non-Hawks fans know of Joe Johnson, this probably looks like the most idiotic, most undeserved contract of all the big name free agents.
It's certainly too much money, I'm not going to argue against that. But for anyone who is not a long standing (and long suffering) Hawks fan, you probably wouldn't see that the Hawks turnaround started several years ago when Joe first came to town. He was playing at an All-Star level before he ever got that recognition and at a time when Hawks fans were starting to forget what it was like to have any good players on the roster.
To a lot of people this is still viewed as the Joe Johnson Era. Perhaps if we sign/draft/trade for another breakout star the city's love affair with Joe Johnson will start to fade. But until then, even though he ended last season on incredibly bad terms, Joe is still the man in Atlanta.

Well, the Bulls and Knicks, two teams that were reportedly after Johnson, will now have one less big name in which to try and sign.
And, as we've previously noted, it likely could start the bidding on Josh Childress, a player the Hawks likely won't match any offers on now because they've invested so much into Johnson.
There are several teams that reportedly have interest in Childress.
