Well, a 22-year-old man in Texas did it (Dime Magazine) without the need for a time machine, although it wasn't at his original school. All he had to do was convince a bunch of people in a small Texas town that he was a homeless 16-year-old Haitian orphan. His coach even took him in and housed him! Unfortunately for little scheme, he was eventually discovered when his old coaches from his original high school in Florida saw him at an AAU tournament in Arkansas.
This story is so, so bizarre. First of all, I can't help but wonder what he was hoping to get out of this? College scholarship? Some statutory rape accusations? Love and acceptance? Second, I'm trying to decide if this is a bigger deal than that Danny Almonte fiasco from several years back. Third, I didn't see it mentioned in the article but when I first heard this story on Around the Horn I believe they said this dude led his team to the state title (or at least made a run in the playoffs). As an added bonus, this actually happened at the high school on which the book Friday Night Lights was based. I think the only way this story could be more bizarre is if the guy looked like Greg "Old Man" Oden.
I keep wanting to say that I can't believe he didn't get caught sooner, but the more I think about it, how WOULD they catch on? I haven't been in school in forever so I don't know how closely they check identifying documents when kids enroll in public schools. And if the man was supposedly an orphan from another country, I'll bet they gave him a pass on not having certain documents readily available.
Anybody hear of anything else like this happening elsewhere?

Anthony Avalos attended and played basketball at Kofa High School in Yuma, Ariz., before he was caught last November (highschool.rivals.com). Avalos, also 22, graduated from a Florida high school in 2005.
And then there was the case of Neville Davis. Playing as Steele Davis, he was the eternal sophomore, starring at several schools along the East Coast starting in 2005. He wasn't caught until April of 2009.
Avalos was apparently trying to get a college scholarship, so there's that motivation. No word on Montimere's motives, but he's facing charges (articles.sun-sentinel.com) in the case, namely tampering with government records. | DJ FrostyFreeze
