Well, all you gotta do is win on the road - it only took the Spurs one road win to make all the difference and score the upset.

Your thoughts, Mark Cuban?

Since their trip to the 2006 NBA Finals, the Mavericks have only advanced out of the second round once, and that was last year. Of course they failed in epic fashion in '07, going 67-15 and losing to the eighth-seeded Warriors in six games.

When the Mavericks made their long-awaited return to the playoffs in '01, their season came to an end at the Spurs' hands after Dallas defeated the Jazz in the first round. The Mavs lost to the Spurs again in the conference finals in '03, but they defeated the Spurs in the '06 semis and '09 first round.

And now again in the 2010 first round, the Spurs regain the overall edge. Good, balanced rivalry between these two. Except for the fact that the Spurs have won four championships more than the Mavericks.

The Spurs also become the first 7th seeded team to advance to the second round since everything (including the 1st round) became a best out of 7 series.

The Spurs are not to underestimated; they may be a 7th seed still, but they are a dangerous 7th seed and still have the playoff experience to get through the postseason. It should be an interesting series between San Antonio and Phoenix.

However, I would also like to note that is good as the Mavs are, they are choke artists in the postseason. In a way I do feel sorry for them because they have a slightly deeper team than before but they have now lost in the first round 4 out of the last 5 years and Dallas seemingly cannot get this monkey off their back.

I am secretly hoping that this latest Mavs embarrassment convinces Dirk to opt out of his contract just so I can enjoy The Summer of 2010 that much more.

But it's his fault in a way so I don't think that would be very productive.

I agree, at least somewhat, but a guy at that level probably isn't likely to shoulder all the blame. And at the very least it has to be getting frustrating to him, so something big has to change. I heard someone say today that Dirk isn't going to win any titles until either he gets a legit #2 option... or he becomes a #2 option somewhere else.

Or maybe they bring in a new #1 to Dallas and Dirk slides down to #2?

Dwayne Wade going to Dallas would be HIGHLY unlikely I think. They could probably pull someone like Bosh or whoever else is out there, but Dirk would probably have to restructure his contract then I'd think. He definitely gets paid like a #1 despite not being one.

Dallas has had such talented teams these last few years that I really don't think that was the problem. Kobe won a title without any more of a #2 than Dirk has had.

EDIT - And Wade's Heat *Beat* Dallas without any more of a #2 than Dirk had.
