I agree. Which is why I did.

Given the link I gave you (and again), this statement is false. Or as you would say, "disingenuous, to say the least". With redistricting happening every 10 years it seems, I can understand someone saying that area is traditionally Republican-held, but don't make some blanket statement that has been slathered all over the media, just to give liberals a funny joke to tell at their next cocktail party, when it has been proven false. Disingenous, indeed.

None of this means much of anything. What does count is that Obama is owning it, unlike a certain former president.

What matters is the economy and jobless numbers between now and next November.

What matters is the Republicans standing for something, anything and putting forth plans. Oh and they need to stop the internecine fighting. Any true Reagan disciple would know that.

What matters is the Democrats growing a set over the next year and doing what they said they wanted to do.

What matters is how things are going in Iraq and Afghanistan in a year. Lots of body bags isn't a good thing for those in power.

What matters is passing and implementing real health insurance reform.

How all this stuff plays out is what matters, not what happens in November 2009. We really need more for cable news/opinion channels to do. And I would be shocked if the Dems didn't lose seats next year, it's how things go.

Ugh. If you can't see that when the guy you linked to represented a completely different district that was named the 23rd at the time, then I'm not sure this is going anywhere. The area currently known as the 23rd district had not been represented by a Democrat since the Civil War. I am not getting this from a liberal source, I'm getting this from Wikipedia. Just. Stop. Now.

This is why my wife, a history teacher, doesn't allow Wikipedia as a valid source in her students research papers...

I went to the Wikipedia page to check the source of Wikipedia's information & with a single click of the footnote I was taken to www.swingstateproject.com/, hardly an unbiased source.

I could care less about when the 23rd district was last held by whoever, but please stop using Wikipedia as the bastion of reliable research.

Okay, then. Here's proof where Wikipedia is only used to provide the blank map of New York that I filled in below.

First off, Stratton's obituary (nytimes.com), in the New York Times.

Originally posted by John T. McQuiston
He was first elected to the House in 1958, becoming the only Democrat in 42 years to be sent to Congress from what was then the 32d Congressional District in the Albany-Schenectady-Troy area.

Despite several redistrictings in a predominantly Republican area, he was returned to Congress with ease every two years and became dean of the New York delegation in January 1979. At his retirement, Mr. Stratton represented the 23d District.

Alas, I can't find a detailed history of all the Congressional districts in New York besides Wikipedia, although some assclown named D.K. Jamaal ("assclown" = "columnist who may very well have set up AutoText to change "Democrat" to "Obamacrat"") does point out that the current 23rd was carved out of other districts... none of which were represented by Stratton. He claims the meme was started by "lefties".

Wrong. It was the Syracuse Post-Standard (syracuse.com).

And now, one of the most reliably Republican seats in the nation — held by the GOP since the Civil War era — is at stake.

If you can find a reliable source that says that the area currently known as the 23rd (all of Clinton, Franklin, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oswego and St. Lawrence Counties, and parts of Essex, Fulton, and Oneida Counties) was represented by a Democrat between the Civil War and 2010, please do. (The assclown mentioned previously doesn't count. Biased and all.) But a map of the areas that were components of the 23rd district during Stratton's tenure (Albany County, Schenectady County, and parts of Montgomery and Rensselaer Counties) should tell you that he didn't represent the current 23rd district.

The map below illustrates what I'm talking about. The counties represented, all or in part, by Samuel Stratton are in red. The counties that, either partially or totally, represent the 23rd district as it is now are in green. The areas where there is crossover don't exist.

(image removed)

This (nationalatlas.gov) is the current 21st district. It includes both counties that were entirely in Stratton's district, all of Montgomery (which was shared between the then-21st and Stratton's 23rd), and parts of Rensselaer County. This (nationalatlas.gov) is the current 23rd, which contains absolutely none of Stratton's old district. Admittedly, yes, the current 21st contains part of Fulton County, while most of that county makes up the 23rd. But Stratton never represented Fulton County. (For the record, Fulton is the little green one adjacent to Stratton's territory. Adjacent.)

Again, if you can find proof that a Democrat represented the current 23rd, go ahead, but Samuel Stratton did not.

So while you might not care, Von Maestro... there. I just made the case that saying Stratton represented the current 23rd is wrong without touching Wikipedia. (I hope this is the end of this, because I'm even annoying myself with these walls o' text.)

Aww, how cute, the commenters can't be arsed to look through the archives and find any SNL sketches lampooning MSNBC analysts. (Psst: the Olbermann one has a Special Comment.)

I'd say the sketch was pretty funny too. Not exactly hilarious, but hit all the important notes.
