Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - Gary Sheffield's pinch-hit leadoff home run in the seventh inning of the Mets' game with the Brewers gave the slugger 500 career home runs.
Sheffield is the first player ever to hit his 500th home run in a Mets uniform and becomes the 25th player in MLB history to accomplish the feat. The line drive homer to left came off Brewers reliever Mitch Stetter.
He is the only player ever to have his first homer with a new team be his 500th and is the first to accomplish the mark since Manny Ramirez did it last year on May 31.
It took him 2,482 games and 8,954 at-bats to hit number 500, spending time throughout his 21-year career with the Brewers, Padres, Marlins, Dodgers, Braves, Yankees and Tigers.

They noted that, of the 500 HRs, that was only his 2nd PH one. | The Thrill
