| #1 Posted on 25.1.09 0145.32 Reposted on: 25.1.16 0149.18 | On Thursday, the NBA released the starting lineups for the 58th annual All-Star Game (February 15, 2009 in Phoenix), and Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard set an all-time vote record with 3.1 million people voting him into the All-Star Game.
Huh. China must have dropped the ball or something.
In any event, the East will be represented by Pistons guard Allen Iverson (in his 10th appearance), Heat guard Dwayne Wade (5th), Cavs forward LeBron James (5th), Celtics forward Kevin Garnett (12th), and Howard (3rd).
The West will start Hornets guard Chris Paul (2nd), Lakers guard Kobe Bryant (11th), Spurs forward Tim Duncan (11th), Suns forward Amar'e [sic] Stoudemire (4th), and Rockets center Yao Ming (7th).
Yao Ming is making his seventh All-Star appearance? Jeez, it feels like his rookie year ended yesterday!
UPDATE, 1/29/09:
The NBA has announced the reserves for the All-Star game, as selected by the coaches.
For the East, Magic guard Jameer Nelson and forward Rashard Lewis will join teammate and all-time leading vote-getter Dwight Howard, giving the Magic three All-Stars for the first time ever. Celtics forward and 2008 NBA Finals MVP Paul Pierce, Nets guard Devin Harris, Pacers forward Danny Granger (YES!), Raptors forward Chris Bosh and Hawks guard Joe Johnson will also wear the blue of the Eastern Conference All-Stars. (And I don't see a center among that mix-- no, I don't count Bosh. What happened to two forwards, two guards, one center and two at-large, hmm?)
The Western Conference All-Star reserves will be Suns center Shaquille O'Neal (who, at least is an undisputed center, even if he thinks he's a point guard when playing in the All-Star game, hee), Nuggets guard Chauncey Billups (who's a far more deserving selection than East starter Allen Iverson, whom he was traded for), Lakers forward Pau Gasol, Spurs guard Tony Parker, Blazers swingman Brandon Roy, Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki and Hornets forward David West.
