Psych has a snarky lead and snarky references and is generally...snarky. And funny, I might add. Shawn and Gus are good on screen. Lassiter is worth a chuckle. Jules is cute enough and she dressed up like a Rollergirl, so that's worth something.

How a show like this is the big hit of the year and Pushing Daisies (a completely original and smart series) gets cancelled is beyond me. I guess it gets it's audience from all of the CBS cookie-cutter cop shows. I suppose people don't like to be challenged.

How about the fact that the lead isn't an unlikeable prick?
I have a rule about TV shows: I give it one episode. If I like what I see, I become a fan. However, if at any time during the episode I have an uncontrollable urge to beat the living shit out of 3 or more main characters, I change the channel and never watch the show again.
I got through the first 20 minutes of the pilot of Psych.
Shawn is a whimpering douche, Gus is a spineless wimp that should've kicked his ass the second he gave him a silly name in front of other people, and Shawn's dad should'be used protection. And I don't mean worn the condom, I mean he should've strangled himself with it.

If you've only seen the pilot, you need to give Psych another shot. None of your character descriptions are even close. Maaaaybe Gus, but I'd describe him more like a loveable nerd who is occasionally afraid of things they come across, not a "spineless wimp".

We've watched Psych a few times, but their version of Santa Barbara and the version of Santa Barbara in which we live are so drastically different that we spent more time being distracted by those differences than paying attention to the show. Our police station is NO WHERE NEAR as nice as the one depicted. | Zeruel

I have to watch NCIS episodes at least twice because their DC and suburbs are not like the real DC and suburbs. They actually had mountains within the beltway (It's pretty flat near the city). Their characters don't metro and drive to the Navy Yard (which is a stop on the green line of the metro), and they talk about roads funny. THE 395. THE 495. No one talks like that around here. It's I-395, or just 395. It's I-495, 495, or The Beltway. No one puts "THE" in front of the number in these parts.
All those geographic errors distract me from the plot.
OH, their Metro PD cops are 99% white on the show. I've NEVER seen a white cop when I worked in the city.

No St. Louis resident can watch more than five minutes of The John Larroquette Show without their head exploding. It's been too long so I can't remember half the inaccuracies, but I remember their talk about "the subway" being quite disconcerting.
I just can't get into Psych...probably because I never give it a chance. Being such a Monkphile, I probably should. | thecubsfan

Plus, Juliet didn't get cast until episode 2 and she makes the show come together a bit better.
There usually an unhuman moment or two, where the characters at in a fashion no one not on a TV show would ever act. And the man-love overtones are so deep, JD & Turk would think it's weird but it doesn't take itself seriously and it doesn't ask you to take it seriously, which is not the impression I get from the Mentalist. | Oliver

Unfortunately, PSYCH isn't available in Canada through conventional (read: legal) means. Wikipedia suggests its on the "E!" network here, but I can't find it in my DVR's TV listings.
