(from Stephen A. Smith, of all people)

The Nuggets and Pistons have agreed in principle on a trade that would send Allen Iverson to Detroit and Chauncey Billups, Antonio McDyess and Cheikh Samb to Denver, sources have told ESPN.
The deal has not been finalized.
This would be the second time Iverson has been traded in two years. He was dealt by Philadelphia to Denver in December 2006, kicked out of Philly over irreconcilable differences as part of a package that brought Andre Miller to the 76ers.

---

This is a weird deal for the Pistons... I guess it's cap relief, but they aren't winning with this team. Plus Sheed and AI on the same team? And both in contract years? Are they trying to give Michael Curry a degree of difficulty?

Pardon my ignorance: was Billups clamoring for a trade or something? Why did this happen??

So the Pistons will have a bunch of salary cap space over the next 2 years. My guess is that Dumars realized this team had already peaked, so he is getting ready to reload...

I totally get that the Pistons had to freshen up their roster, but I still don't get this move at all. The only one who could benefit in any way is Billups, who returns home to Colorado. I mean, I thought Denver was in Salary Cap Hell, which is why they sent Marcus Camby to the Clippers for pennies. Why make this move, which doesn't make them anymore of a contender? And why make this move if you're Detroit? Why disrupt the team chemistry with a shoot-first PG like Iverson?

I just don't get it.

Because Iverson will make $21.9 million this year, which will come off Detroit's books at the end of the season when his contract is up.

Like Java said, Dumars must think now is the time to start over?

It's a great trade for Denver who really needed a level headed veteran to run the team.

The AI move might not make a ton of sense, but I like the idea of him playing in a gritty city like Detroit or Philly over the urban sprawl of Denver. I was also getting a little tired of this Pistons lineup. They should be fun to watch again.

McDyess will probably have a nice 30 days off until he rejoins the Pistons

It's a shame Denver didn't want Marbury

To answer the question everyone seems to have, Detroit made the move because they've had essentially the same team since 2004 and only one championship to show for it.

It wasn't gonna get done with these guys, they weren't going to be playing for a championship this year anyway. This is a move strictly looking at the future, and a good one at that.

This is a good trade for both teams to be honest. Unfortunately, I no longer have 2 of my 3 favorite players on the same team. However, I think Juan Dixon plays for the Pistons so I will still have 2 of my 3 favorite players on the same team. Good trade!!

The other factor is that Dumars isn't just opening up cap room, he's opening up cap room to make a play at LeBron James. Dumars is basically banking on the Knicks and Nets still being garbage in two years so a title-hungry James will want to play for a contender.

They would have to be awfully close to winning it all for it to happen. I have to believe he would prefer a major media market and a championship ring.

Don't worry about it. He's not going anywhere in 2010, especially since the Cavs are in great cap shape for 2010, he can make the most money there contract-wise, and he loves being the face of his hometown franchise.

Really though, the 2010 free-agent class looks to be outstanding so far. Chris Bosh would be another great player to obtain, but I would almost think he'll be in the same boat with Toronto.

May I direct you to this thread? A lot can change between now and 2010. Of course, I don't think there's any chance in Hades that Detroit would be his destination, but NY or LA aren't out of the question.

And at least the Pistons will be more exciting to watch with Stuckey and Iverson flying down the court. Should be a lot more interesting than the stuffy-2004/05/06/07-boring-half-court-plodding-OMG-do-we-have-to-watch-them-in-the-Eastern-Conference-Finals-again?-it's-no-fun-if-it-isn't-the-Lakers-or-the-Celtics-or-some-team-that-scores-120-points-a-game Pistons.

True, but he's already re-signed once. I'm glad at least he has this leverage over the front office to keep them honest, but I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. Not yet, anyway.

You gotta admit, it gets kind of silly when every little activity lately becomes "OMG, they're going for LeBron!"
