UK coach Billy Gillispie (along with Illinois coach Bruce Weber) is taking advantage of an NCAA rule that allows for 2 weekly hours of skill instruction prior to the official start of practice. Gillispie is using the Cats' 2 hours this week to host Big Blue Madness - the public kickoff to basketball season. It is expected that Rupp Arena will again hold 23,000 plus screaming fans for a practice. The fans are excited that basketball is back and they're excited for many of the following reasons.

Patrick Patterson - The sophomore forward has All-American aspirations. His freshman season ended early due to an ankle injury, yet he was still co-SEC freshman of the year. He's also grown an afro which for some reason makes UK message board fans happy (I'm not making any of that up).

Jodie Meeks - The junior guard has recovered from a sophomore season that saw him limited to 10 games. He went from a fractured pelvis to having the suddenly popular sports hernia surgery last April.

Perry Stevenson - The junior forward/center started to "get it" last year. Fans are anxious to see if he can continue the trend this year.

Ramon Harris - This junior wing player became the team's best defender last year. He's become a team leader and is rumored (the ever legendary summer games) to have improved his offensive game.

Newcomers galore - Freshman D'Andre Liggins is expected to compete with Juco transfer and junior Kevin Galloway for the starting point guard spot(lead guard in Gillispie's system). Both will log plenty of minutes.

Josh Harrelson is a sophomore Juco transfer. 6'10" (or so they say) he likes to wear blue jean shorts so UK fans have lovingly nicknamed him "Jorts" (again, I'm not making any of this up). He's a big banger who is expected to add depth to the frontcourt, compete with Stevenson for a starting spot, and provide a fine complement to Patterson in the post.

Darius Miller is a top-50 recruit from Kentucky. He was Kentucky's Mr. Basketball and is a small forward. Fans expect him to contribute, though most expect that he'll play big minutes off the bench as a freshman.

Donald Williams was a late addition to the team. Not much information is available on this freshman - except that he is supposed to have a nice jumper and that Coach liked him enough to offer a scholly.

On a related note, the National Assocation of Basketball Coaches is po'd at Gillispie for moving Madness up one week. By all accounts it was done for recruiting purposes and to also allow the beginning of practice next week to be all about practice. The NABC has chastised UK (but not Illinois for some reason) - expect this to be the last year that Madness may come early.

Basketball begins tonight at 10:30 EDT in the Bluegrass! What is in store for your team this year? If you're a UNC fan - a bunch of wins, you should build a monument to TH and the gang for coming back to school.

College basketball already?? Goodness gracious! I guess it's easier for college basketball to sneak up on me when college FOOTBALL is going so well this time around.

Now personally, what I'd like to know is what is Davidson up to this year? I was the only person I knew last year who put Davidson into the Final Four in at least one of my brackets, but with Jason Richards playing for the Miami Heat this year I'm not sure who's going to be feeding my man Stephen Curry the ball anymore.

SI did an article on Curry a few weeks ago in which it was revealed that Curry is moving to the point to replace Richards - this is done in part to prep Curry for the NBA, since the conventional wisdom is that Curry's too undersized to be an NBA 2-guard.

So to answer your question, Curry will be fed the ball from himself. ;)

Ouch at the UT reference. Just OUCH.

I like the two memorials to Keightley on the uniform. I'll let the rest grow on me. I love the fact that Daniel Orton will be wearing one next year.
