Report: Donaghy says refs fixed playoff series
The Tim Donaghy scandal just got more serious.
The disgraced former NBA referee told authorities that two officials conspired to fix the outcome of a 2002 playoff series, according to a report on the New York Daily News Web site.
Court documents filed Tuesday by Donaghy's lawyer detail the "inner workings" of a plot in which top league executives used referees to manipulate the games, the report said. Donaghy claims two referees were "company men," conspiring to extend a playoff series in 2002 to a seventh game.
The documents did not name the series, but the Lakers-Kings Western Conference finals was the only series in 2002 that went to a seventh game, with the Lakers winning Game 6 106-102.
Well, Kings fans always felt ripped off about that series. But this is the first time that there might be some actual evidence that their guys were hosed.

And if there's even an ounce of truth to what Donaghy is saying - and I have no reason to doubt that Donaghy's telling the truth - the NBA deserves to burn.
EDIT: Some additional information... (sports.espn.go.com)
The letter also details an incident in the 2002 playoffs in which Donaghy alleges that two referees, who were known as NBA "company men," wanted to extend a series to seven games. "Team 5" could have wrapped up the series in Game 6 but lost two players to ejection, lost that game and ultimately the series.
It is not clear to which series this account refers.
The only playoff series that year that went to seven games was Lakers/Kings. The record says that there were no ejections in any of the last three games, but Donaghy easily could have mistaken ejections for technical fouls.
EDIT AGAIN: Based on a closer reading of False's original article, "ejections" merely refers to players being DQ'd for six personal fouls. That fits with this game (Divac, Pollard).

The fact that Donaghy was betting on games and is doing anything to keep his ass from being Bubba's for 20 years might cause me to have some doubt about him telling the truth. Of course if the Kings could shoot free throws, they would have won the series anyway.

If, and at this point, it's still just IF, Donaghy can back this up, legitimately, that's it for Stern, or that's it for the NBA. There would have to be a major, major cleanout of league execs for the league to maintain any sort of credibility. | CRZ

Nothing will happen - anyone that thinks there has been any credibility in any sport for at least a decade is too far gone to argue. That's why Fantasy Sports were invented - it takes your mind off betting.

Unless the referees moved the arc of the Kings' free throw attempts with their minds, at the very least it wasn't the refs that cost them Game 7 that year. | redsoxnation
