| #1 Posted on 13.5.08 1337.20 Reposted on: 13.5.15 1338.39 | I've done a lot of research on this, and have come up empty...so, I give this question to the fine folks here.
I want to set up a wireless LAN. The future Missus and I do a lot of file sharing between each others computers. I'd also like to be able to send files to be printed to our new printer.
Lisa's running Windows 2000 Pro on her desktop, and my laptop is running Vista Home Basic. We're both wirelessly connected to the Internet. The printer is connected to Lisa's computer by USB.
If anyone can offer assistance, I would very much appreciate it.

Uh, it sounds like you already have this. How are you both connected wirelessly to the internet? | ironcladlou

| #5 Posted on 17.5.08 1507.55 Reposted on: 17.5.15 1507.58 | An update: I've been able to set up somewhat of a network: I now have access to the printer, and a few of the other computer's folders. While it's not exactly what i wanted (having the HD of the other system listed as a drive on my computer) it'll have to do for now.
You guys are awesome! | ironcladlou

| #6 Posted on 18.5.08 2007.40 Reposted on: 18.5.15 2007.42 | That's easy enough to set up. On the computer you want to add the drive to, go into My Computer, go into Tools/Map Network Drive. Select a drive letter and put the following in the Folder box:
\\[computer]\c$
Where [computer] is the name of the machine with the drive you want to share. If you're not sure of the name, go to the computer in question, click Start/Run, type in CMD and hit enter. At the command prompt, enter "hostname", omitting quotes and hit enter. The next line will be the name of the computer. Once you've got that in the folder box, click on where it says "different user name" in blue. For Username, put in the following
[computer]\Administrator
Again, replacing [computer] with the same thing you put in above. Use the Administrator password for the computer you want to share the drive from. (If you don't know the Admin password, I'm afraid I can't help you there.) Finally, make sure you check the box marked "Reconnect at logon". That'll give you full access to the drive. Good luck, and let me know if you have any problems. | wmatistic

I wonder if there's a way to access each other's optical drives this way. Hmmm.... | ironcladlou

\\[computer]\[driveletter]$
Where [driveletter] is the letter of the optical drive. For example: \\laptop\d$
Keep in mind, this will ONLY work if there's something actually in the drive. | Oliver

You mean setting up an Internet printer? Yeah, you can do that, and I have it set up for one of my home printers actually.
Edit - I should add "you can do that" with a server OS. It's built into say Windows Server 2003, but not like Windows XP.

I'm running Vista Home Basic; but I'm thinking about downgrading (or, would that be upgrading?) to Windows XP Media Centre Edition or, at the very least, Windows XP Pro. | thecubsfan

| #13 Posted on 22.5.08 1532.00 Reposted on: 22.5.15 1532.09 | You could, but it involves setting up a home VPN server and making sure everything is locked down tight enough that no one with malicious intent can slip onto your network.
Another option: For $70/year, you could instead sign up for LogMeIn Pro, which allows you to do exactly what you're asking for. (GoToMyPC offers the same thing at a much higher price.) The price is a bit much unless this is something you'd do all the time.
There's a good free work around using LogMeIn's service. They have a free version, which gives you access to the home desktop computer you install the program on from anywhere. It doesn't give you the file sharing or remote printing of the Pro version, but an inventive person could always e-mail the file they want to print to an account they can access from the web, then log onto their home computer, open the file there and print from inside the logmein window. It's a bit more work (lag comes into play when you're using the home computer), but it's great for the price. | ironcladlou

Well, it is a high-demand if the cords to the printer are difficult to reach, Lou
