It took less than 2 years, but Larry Brown has already stepped down as Sixers VP.

ESPN - After less than 2 years, Brown steps down as 76ers' vice president

Brown resigned as the Philadelphia 76ers' executive vice president on Thursday with the intent to pursue a coaching job at the NBA or college level.

Brown, enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, has been a winner at every stop, but hasn't coached since a bitter split with the New York Knicks and then-team president Isiah Thomas after just one season (2005-06).

"He has the taste of coaching back in his mouth," Brown's agent, Joe Glass, said. "It would be refreshing to have a situation going that he could enjoy, rather than the last one, to say the least."

Glass said Brown, who won an NBA title with Detroit (2004) and a college title with Kansas (1988), would not rule out returning to either level.

I know it'll be a cold day in hell before this happens, but it'd be hilarious if Larry Brown found himself coaching the Knicks again. There'd be a lot of gnashing of teeth from Isiah Thomas if that happened.

In terms of more realistic scenarios, there's always a team desperate enough to take a proven winner, even if he's also proven he can bolt town faster than you can say "Bobby Petrino". Someone in the east will overpay for him.

With all the talk of canning Mike Woodson and getting a new, preferably offensive-minded coach for the Hawks, all I can say now is that I. Am. Terrified.

WHy? What do you guys have to lose? Especially if the Hawks sign him to a 2 year contract with some sort of "If you leave we dont have to pay you" clause or something.

Call my reaction rash, but we're still hurting from Bobby Petrino and the Falcons. The last thing we need now is the Travelin' Man himself trying to insinuate himself into our sports world. We're on the cusp of being respectable again with Woodson, so what we do next could be VERY crucial to the success of the franchise over the course of the next half decade. Give me a long-term solution, not a big name gamble that someone hopes is gonna be a quick fix.

I think whatever success the Hawks have now are despite Woodson's coaching. That said, I also don't want Brown here. It will be interesting on how Billy Knight will shape up the roster for a 2009 playoff run but I don't the confidence that Bibby will be the one acquisition that will push the Hawks into contender status. If the Joe Johnson of two seasons ago was on the team now I wouldn't be so pessimistic about the Hawks now.

IMO, Woodson himself is just not a good coach. If his contract is not renewed then I won't shed a tear. Although I sense his dubious credit for putting the Hawks into the playoffs would "validate" the need to keep him.

Larry was being linked to the Providence College job a few weeks ago, so who knows where he winds up should some college coach jump to the pros. If the Mavs don't turn things around quickly, does Larry end up with Mark Cuban?

StingArmy can rest easy, because the lucky "winners" of the Larry Brown sweepstakes look to be the Charlotte Bobcats, impressing roughly no one.

I feel strange celebrating such seemingly irrelevant-to-me news, but woohoo!!

I saw this and thought

"my god. Did Brown quit after two days as Bobcats coach?"
