I'm curious as well. I visited the site, but I'm admittedly just barely literate in this sort of thing and couldn't make heads or tails of it. A good friend of mine keeps raving about it, but he's horrible at explaining why the things he likes are awesome.
Also, if you could convince me not to think of "Twitter" as a naughty verb and giggle every time I hear it, I'd be doubly appreciative. | odessasteps

I have friends that post something when they're out and about and aren't near a computer. Just usually dumb stuff, like "In line at the movies and saw a cute chick" or "I can't believe I paid $4 for some kind of coffee flavored beverage."
Some other people I know will post updates to let people know when they have updates their blogs with a new article or whatnot.
I very rarely actually post to mine. And I think I only have like 2 or 3 people "following me" anyway. | geemoney

If somebody texted me "In line at the movies and saw a cute chick" I would probably punch him in the mouth next time I saw him. Then again, I guess if I'm "following" him on Twitter it'd be basically the same thing. That said, if nothing else sending a Twitter update is far more convenient and less costly than mass texting your friends. Also, I don't think The W is going to be sending me text messages any time soon.

I think the term is "microblogging." It's absolutely NOT useful in any situation but it has its charm.
We (Kim) have a plan where unlimited texting is free, so I thought I should take advantage of it - also I wanted to see if I could code it from here. By following The W via tweets to my mobile phone, it's really just another sneaky way for me to pull a "newsfeed" from here no matter if I'm at a computer or not.
geemoney, think of it as texting, yes, but to/with a blog instead of to one person - so instead of just one recipient ignoring the texter, the entire WORLD has the chance to ignore him/her. :) | Guru Zim

1. I don't have a blackberry. It's a SIDEKICK 3 FOR GIRLZ 2. RSS is a "pull" while tweets are a "push" (for me) | odessasteps

| #11 Posted on 1.5.08 1616.38 Reposted on: 1.5.15 1619.44 | This was in a chat today with the Washington Post's technology writer.
Ardmore, Pa.: How do you find Twitter helping you professionally?
Rob Pegoraro: It works in a few different ways.
* It's a good outlet for tidbits that aren't blog-worthy, or aren't blog-worthy yet. (People have called Twittering "micro-blogging," which I think is a pretty apt description.)
* I can "chat," in slow motion, with other writers and sources
* Keeping a presence on Twitter, at some level, may serve to demonstrate that I grok this whole Web 2.0 thingamajig. (I.e., all the other kids are doing it!)

Whenever I do something -- even if it's tiny -- I get to put it on Twitter. So I'm not actually using it as any sort of "social networking" but it's kind of cute.

| #13 Posted on 30.10.09 1419.50 Reposted on: 30.10.16 1420.52 | With the Lists feature recently added to Twitter and made available to most of the masses, we've added a list containing all the folks who added their Twitter usernames in their profiles (except supersalvadoran, who is a private Tweeter and should be mocked) PLUS Aaron and Cubs, who were too good to put their usernames in the profiles. (There are other folks whose Twitter names I know which aren't in a profile, but I was going for expediency this morning.)
If you're curious to see what 26 or 27 folks from this board are doing off hours, hit up http://twitter.com/The_W/users.
If you DON'T want to be included in this list - or if you AREN'T included but want to be - please let me know via PM, IM, email, tweet, carrier pigeon, or smoke signal.
We also have a combined feed from The W and The 7 at http://twitter.com/The_W/feeds, but you may just want to follow @The_W and @The_7 - or you may not, 'cause people sure seemed to start A LOT of threads seven years ago.
Also, I recently successfully fought a trademark battle and won the right to rebrand with the @CRZ username, which is easily the proudest moment of my Web 2.0 career. Remember, kids - you won't know what yogurt I've eaten today if you don't follow me! | dunkndollaz

It just adds the W list to your list of lists, so your main timeline won't suddenly have all these tweets about yogurt in there.
I really like the new lists feature. It's opened up the way I use Twitter.
FYI, the only yogurt you ever need buy is the Yoplait French Cheesecake flavour! It's 99% fat free and tastes like Cheesecake. What else is there to know. | The Thrill
