As of today, Chris Webber is no longer a member of the Philadelphia 76ers-- they bought out the remaining year-and-a-half on his contract yesterday and he was officially waived today.

Between his injuries (man, microfracture surgery has been a son-of-a-bitch to more than a few athletes, huh?) and his lack of desire to be part of a rebuilding team, it was pretty clear that Webber needed a new home.

So... what's the over/under on the Phoenix Suns picking him up?

Too bad the Maloofs are too proud to bring him back. If he doesn't go to Detroit, I could see him joining the Lakers, thinking "hey, they got Mitch Richmond a ring." Then again, he's still good friends with Avery Johnson...

I hope he DOES join a contender, and I hope they get him a ring. Even if it is the Lakers.

Yeah... even if it had meant Reggie Miller had to leave the Pacers, I would have loved to see him get a championship, so I can understand how you feel about that. On the other hand it was nice to see Reggie spend his entire career with us, but with Webber that ship's sailed already.

I'm fairly biased because I've never liked him, but I dont think the Lakers need Chris Webber. We got Lamar Odom (possible return end of Jan?) and Kwame Brown (possible return mid Feb?) both on the shelf with injuries and there were rumors a couple weeks ago that the Lakers were pondering a trade to find a big body or 2 to fill the hole in the roster until they return, but I havent heard anything about that for awhile.

C-Webb is at the very tail-end of his career so anyone who picks him up would only get a temporary (and limited) answer to their problems anyway.

It'll be Detroit, apparently, so SI.com is reporting.

No doubt he'd like to follow in the footsteps of Antonio McDyess and go from being an oft-injured player on a bad team to a contributor on a championship contender.

EDIT (1/16, 6:14 p.m.): It's official, Webber has signed a prorated contract with the Pistons for the veteran's minimum. He'll make around $650,000 to finish his season with Detroit.
