I've seen lots of "I hate Wal-Mart" and "Wal-Mart is Satan" threads on other boards with posters boldly declaring they'll drive "x" miles to another store or spend "x" dollars more on a product at another store. Are they really sending a message or just wasting gas and money?

Do you boycott any business or product and why? Political reasons, poor treatment in the past, or something else?

I can't think of anything for me. There's a post office I drive to despite another that's closer because I like the clerks better, but I haven't sworn the other off completely.
It's pretty hard to boycott the US Postal Service, as Cosmo Kramer once found out...

I usually boycott the "Must see blockbuster"
I started with Batman, through Jurassic Park and more recently the Matrix, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings movies. I have recently incorporated books into this rule - The Da Vinci Code especially.
I couldn't give you a rational justification for it.

I try not to go to Wal-Mart unless absolutely necessary. Also, working at Blockbuster, I don't rent DVDs or games from anyplace other than Blockbuster, so that may technically be a form of boycotting, although it's really more because of my employee discount.

I don't have any faith in getting people to follow me, so no real boycotts. I just won't watch Fox News, even if it's for educational purposes regarding how to tease going into commercials.

I refuse to watch any Roman Polanski or Victor Salva movie. I don't want to see the "vision" of a convicted child molester.

I agree. The only Oscar Polanski should have is a 400 lb. cellmate.

I boycott Blockbuster...no offense ekedolphin.

Just poor treatment in the past. During a time when I couldn't get a credit card, I called the local Blockbuster and explained my situation. They assured me that two forms of ID, and a utility bill confirming my address would be enough to rent movies at their "fine" establishment.

Well...my then 3 year old daughter went with her Mom to pick out a movie while I took care of the membership. No go...after 10 minutes of arguing and asking for a manager, I had to explain to my teary eyed daughter why the horrible man behind the counter would not let her watch a movie. Fun times.

Hollywood Video though farther away had no such problem with us, and continues to get our business to this day (but now only when we can't wait 2 days for Netflix).

My wife also tries to avoid Walmart unless absolutely necessary.

For me, I just totally avoid one of the small local Post Offices near me because the guy that works the counter is a total dickhead.

I wont go to the O'Charley's in Fenton Missouri because the service sucks ass, and they are staffed with almost all high school/freshman in college aged kids who dont want to work, but want to hang out with thier friends and dont understand why you dont tip them 20% when they ignore you all night.

not that I'm bitter or anything.....

And, I boycott France, because Bill O'reilly told me to. (thats a joke)

I try not to buy anything from a big corporation if I can get it from a local business. Food, CDs, books, stuff like that. Sometimes I give in but I feel bad. I'm not too much of a hardliner about it, really, but I own a small business, too -- so it's the absolute least I can do.

Add me to the list of Wal-Mart haters. I did shop there for a month or so back to get my girlfriend a phonecard, but I washed my hands afterwards.

I boycott clear channel for putting out shitty radio. And well, pretty much anything else that puts the little guy out of business. Not that it has or will do any good mind you.

Yes, i boycott companies whose CEOs promote politics I disagree with strongly. The CEOs have to be very strongly against my values and public about it.

My current boycott list is small. Apple Computers and Progressive Auto Insurance.

(whispers) And I love Wal-Mart.

In Canada, we have a big, obnoxious bookstore chain called Chapters-Indigo. A few years ago they expanded their huge box stores across the country, artificially inflating their orders to fill their miles of shelves, and when the first round of returns came in, they all but crippled the Canadian publishing industry.

Not to mention all the hard-working, knowledgable, classy independent booksellers they drove out of business.

Bunch-o-assholes is what they are. A blight on Canadian culture.

I will go out of my way to buy books from independent booksellers, or second-hand book dealers. But there's no way I'm giving one cent of my money to that bunch.

What is with Apple's politics that you disagree with? Agressive Lawsuits? Their licensing practices?

And why do you boycott Nike? Are they so much more evil than reebok, converse, new balance, polo, doc marten, (insert any shoe company name here)?

I boycott lots of movies when I think the politics are ridiculous such as The Day AFter Tomorrow, Motorcycle Diaries, the two new movies with George Clooney coming out, etc.

Oh and Sam Walton is my boy.

I try to avoid shopping at Walmart. If I can get the same item for the same price without going way the hell out of my way, I'll shop from K-mart or Target instead. But sometimes you just can't beat Walmart's low, low prices.

I have heard about this happening at "a restaurant", but do you have some data on this being chain-wide. I don't often eat at Denny's - but that's reason enough to make it permanent, if it's true - and you're generally a respectable guy.
