It's very illuminating to be able to see a graphical representation. I'm still not happy, but at least I can take comfort in the fact that my gas prices are in the middle of the pack. Still, how does Wyoming and Montana have the cheapest gas?! | Zeruel

| #213 Posted on 30.4.06 0256.08 Reposted on: 30.4.13 0256.13 | An interesting question to pose to those 'in the know':
Do big chain gas companies change their prices from their offices, or from some head office?
Reason I'm asking: en route home from my girlfriends' place...I passed a corner where there are three gas stations, all of which were closed (it was just past midnight).
Gas stations one and two: which were Shell and Esso, were at 109.9 or something like that. However, station number three( an independant station) across the street, was listed at 116.7.
How does it work? Are some signs controlled remotely? Locally? Does anyone want to take an educated guess?

| #214 Posted on 30.4.06 0716.10 Reposted on: 30.4.13 0717.07 | I'm not "in the know" but the DC area TV stations always do a "why are prices so high?" piece every time the prices would jump.
According to the reports I have seen, the corporation owned stations are setting the price by zip (postal) codes and the independently owned franchises are under contract to set the prices according to the head office.
There was a story I need to dig up from last year. I think it was a DC area BP owner that tried to buck the "high" price of $2.50 a gallon last year and charged less. He was sued by BP and he tore down their signs and corporate logos and went independent.
I'll see if I can find it. | Oliver

| #215 Posted on 30.4.06 1201.42 Reposted on: 30.4.13 1201.44 | Actually, Zeruel, I'm more interested in knowing how they change their prices on their signs...if it's done at the station, or if it's changed from a corporate office offsite. In the case of the three in my area, the two corporate locations had digital signs, and the independant one had numbers that had to be manually taken down and changed.

More and more places here are going digital for their "big boards" and I've seen their prices change almost ever few hours (I drive by one gas station four times a day for work). | Merc

Today, I drove past a dozen Shell stations in Rhode Island, some 40 miles away from another, and every single Shell had the prices as $2.999,$309.9,$3.219. Usually I'll see at least a penny or 2 difference at some station. |
