Onto the Finals. Should be a highly competitive series between two teams that have the ability to score as well as the ability to shut the other team down. Before the playoffs I had Suns in 7 over the Pistons due to Larry Brown being distracted. Half right on teams, right on Larry Brown. If Duncan's ankles are healthy he's the difference maker. Spurs in a grueling 7 game series, with at least 5 of the 7 games being in doubt with under 30 seconds to go. | BOSsportsfan34

If someone didn't burn those tapes RSN, they should. Those years were the absolute lowest point in the NBA's history. Fortunately, Bird and Magic came into the league together the following year and pulled the league out of that mess.
As for this series, I'm going with the Spurs in 5. Besides their great defense, they showed they can adapt their offense to whatever it takes to win (as we saw in the WCF). As for Brown, what's the over/under on when he announces he's going to Cleveland after the last game of the finals is played? I say 2 days. | Packman V2

Reposted on: 7.6.12 0827.41 | Detroit will go to their patented Other Guys Defensive Scheme (as in: it's OK if the two stars get theirs as long as The Other Guys don't beat you) just like they did with the Lakers and with the Heat. It is imperative for the Spurs cast to do certain things. Parker needs to keep them honest by being able to score from the outside and not turn the ball over, Bowen needs to be able to win a track meet with Hamilton and Nazr needs to box out, clog the lane and keep the Detroit Bigs off the glass. And Duncan and Ginobili need to do a little bit of everything.
Meanwhile, Detroit may have just played 7 games, but they're nowhere near the walking MASH unit that Miami would have been in this series had they been able to score in the last 4 minutes. Plus they know how to beat teams with San Antonio's setup.
In the end, San Antonio having to pick their poison as to whether they want to be mismatched with Billups, Hamilton or Prince (since Bowen can't defend all three) and not being able to match Detroit's depth in the paint will ultimately be their downfall in this series. But that doesn't mean there won't be moments where Duncan beats them and/or Ginobili beats them plus gets enough help to make it interesting.

Since I was hoping for a Heat/Suns finals and the track meet that it would have been, I have to say I am none too interested in this series. I will check in from time to time, but my guess is I will watch the last 2 minutes of each game and that will be enough.

Reposted on: 8.6.12 1212.59 | I can't agree with the "this is boring" talk - if people didn't think the Pistons/Heat series was exciting, I can't help you. Some people may not like it if they aren't scoring 120 points a game, but doesn't bother me in the least.
People keep underestimating the Pistons, saying this one person will beat them or that one person will beat them. I think if it were that easy they would have been out against the Pacers, not to mention the Heat. They win because their main lineup are all great, solid players, instead of having one or two superstars and three ok-to-good starters.
Pistons were heavy underdogs last year and they killed the Lakers. This year they don't seem as overmatched in pregame hype, which likely means it'll be a lot closer...the Pistons seem to be lazy at times when they don't have their backs against the wall.
At least Larry Brown's brilliantly timed "Oh, by the way, I might be leaving next year" distraction seems to be overcome, which is nice.
Barring injury to any of their starters - a possibility since Detroit just had 6 and 7 game series - Detroit in 7. | Gerald

Balki... I mean, Manu Ginobili is friggin' awesome. Detroit's got to come up with an answer for him. Especially since the dominated the early parts of the game.
I love how Al Michaels and Hubie Brown were damn near begging people to appreciate the defensive struggle.

I love Hubie, though. OK, so you love Hubie and you love his tremendous upside...
And I hate Ginobili. He's that guy you hate on the other team but would love to have on your team. He's got no outside shot whatsoever, but he's a friggin' beast in the lane. The guy just goes inside and says, "Either I'm gonna score or you're gonna get called for a foul - charging be damned." And he does.

Don't forget the eventual unambiguous elbow to the face, followed by crappy little kid fighting, threats to never hang out together again... followed by resumption of the game the next day after sheepish non-apologies.
That said, thanks for mentioning nerf basketball. I think that might be the most apt description I've read for how Ginobili was playing. Just spot on. I was watching him last night and thinking, "This is friggin' nuts! How is he getting away with this?" And I'm rooting for San Antonio. But now I know what it was reminding me of. Kudos. |
