This was kind of interesting to me (and probably only me)

From a Houston newspaper...

"We checked on the procedure if guys fouled out," Tomjanovich said.

The Rockets were so concerned about being short-handed, they checked on league rules in case players fouled out and they slipped to fewer than five players.

If a player had to play with six fouls, each subsequent foul by that player would earn a technical foul.

WTF??? So you can leave all five men in even if they've fouled out??? That's wonky. Any more info on this rule?

Here's how I interpret the rule. You can only bring back a player who's fouled out if there are no other players on your bench who haven't fouled out. So, whenever a fouled-out player commits a foul, the other team gets a technical free throw and the ball back. It beats having only 3 or 4 players on the court.

That's pretty cool. I never even thought about that situation coming up. Here's the official wording from Rule 3 (Players, Substitutes and Coaches), from the Official Rules of the NBA

Section I-Team
a. Each team shall consist of five players. No team may be reduced to less than five players. If a player in the game receives his sixth personal foul and all substitutes have already been disqualified, said player shall remain in the game and shall be charged with a personal and team foul. A technical foul also shall be assessed against his team. All subsequent personal fouls, including offensive fouls, shall be treated similarly. All players who have six or more personal fouls and remain in the game shall be treated similarly.
b. In the event that there are only five eligible players remaining and one of these players is injured and must leave the game or is ejected, he must be replaced by the last player who was disqualified by reason of receiving six personal fouls. Each subsequent requirement to replace an injured or ejected player will be treated in this inverse order. Any such re-entry into a game by a disqualified player shall be penalized by a technical foul.

On a slightly similar note, I remember watching a Philippine basketball game where a bench-clearing brawl broke out. The league rules stated that any player who leaves the bench during a fight would be ejected along with the players who got involved in the fight. The result was 4 on 3 for the rest of the game with no subs.

I remember reading about this as a kid and thinking it was cool.

Anyone know if a team ever came close to using this rule?

I already knew this. It happened once or twice before, though I'm too lazy to go check my (literally) hundreds of books on the histories of various sports to find out when.

hmmmm... i didn't know that rule. I wonder what the record number of fouls were by a player in one game. I didn't realize it could go beyond 6.

I don't really think it's ever happened, but if BucsFan can prove me wrong using the wealth of sports information books he has access to, I will gladly admit I was wrong. I can't find any good online sports almanacs...

edit: Whoa...never mind that last sentence. I never remember to use Google first. I'll see if I can't find out the record myself.

edit2: Here we go...
Most personal fouls, game
8 - Jack Toomay, Baltimore at New York, March 26, 1949 (OT)

I don't believe the rule we're discussing applied in this case though...

Actually, I did know that. It was the answer to a trivia question in NBA Live '96 for Genesis. And of all the trivia questions they had in that game, only that one stuck with me through the years, 'cuz let's face it... that's awfully screwed up.

About Jack Toomay's record. Seeing as how it happened in 1949, one has to believe that the rule simply didn't exist at the time. Of course, since it was an overtime game, maybe the team was shorthanded after all.

I once mentioned this rule to both of my parents, and actually they were dazzled by my mad hoop knowledge skillz, yo.

Great rule, so if your best player fouls out all you have to do is get all the rest of team to foul out and you can bring him back in!

That's a good thought, but the rule does state that the LAST player to foul out is the one that stays in.

I have no idea if it has ever happened in the NBA but I was at a college game (maybe 10 years ago) where one team ran out of players and they played the last minute or two 5 on 4. Perhaps they have changed the rule since.

I'm curious about this NBA rule. Each foul after number 6 would be technical. Normally if you get two technicals you are ejected. Since the player couldn't leave would he be hit with another technical?

It's not an NCAA rule. Clemson could only put four men on the floor against UNC's scrubs 3 years ago. It was great. When they ran out of players on the bench Rick Barnes got up and took off his jacket and made like he was going to step in and play. We were all laughing our asses off and jeering their team. Ah the good ol' days.

I believe it was the 01-28-98 game, but I'm not sure becaues the Carolina page doesn't offer a recap of any games from the season. The score for that game was 88-79 Carolina which makes sense because all our guys on the court were bench warmers.

This is probably more common in high school, but I don't know if they have the same rule. I do remember announcing a game where a team only brought 6 players, and 2 of them fouled out. They played about a quarter and a half with only 4 players, and went on like a 20-2 run and ended up losing by 4. It was a very strange game.

My high school team played a game this year where they went to triple overtime, with only four players the entire OT. They won, too. It was awesome.
