A well earned National Championship, withstanding the comeback kids from Illinois.

Sean May is a man now, isn't he?

Illinois has a lot to be proud of in their record-tying season (-breaking in other ways), but by never giving Illinois back the lead, UNC gets the "duke".

And Kansas fans get even angrier... :)

(Rhetorical question: isn't the Heel supposed to lose the blowoff match? Is this WM 2000?)

Being both a St. Louis Cardinals and an Illini fan, the last year has taught me to appreciate the season more than the title. Years from now I won't think about tonight as much as the 37 wins and how fun it was screaming DEEEEEEEEEEEE at the television while co-workers give puzzled looks.

That said, hell of a game - I'm still shaking - and congrats to the Heels, by law the Better Team.

So close, and yet so far.

Ah well. If Illinois had to lose the title to anybody, at least it was Roy. He was long overdue for it.

I just hope that this isn't the closest the Illini ever get. What are the chances that Weber can keep this team together for one more year?

Deron is quite likely gone to the draft. Ingram and Head are seniors, as is Powell...

Dee Brown MAY go, but we've gotten several waverings on that...

My guess is DEEEEE will stay since he didn't get the ring. With him back they've got an outside chance to try again, even if they'll start the season ranked (quite rightfully) in the mid-to-lower top ten.

There are skid marks behind Deron.

It's sad that Luther had to end his career that way, missing shots in the ultra-clutch.

1993 - Heels win NCAA Championship under Dean Smith
1994 - I move to Chapel Hill, North Carolina
2005 - I move to Birmingham, Alabama
2005 - Heels win NCAA Championship under Roy Williams (with Matt Doherty's team!)

Man I wish I was on Franklin Street right now. I'm so happy to be a Tar Heels fan tonight! WHEEEEE, What a game! What a scary comeback by the Illini! What a difference two years of playing can make, eh Sean May? Stick around - you're my new hero!

And in the grand scheme of things the ability of Roy Williams to choke in the clutch is overcome by the awe-inspiring ability of any Chicago-related team to ruin themselves at important moments (and even though they're from Champaign-Urbana, this was a team touched by Chicago). I rooted for U of I all year, but just kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, because, when you live in Chicago, it always does.

Dick Vitale must be ecstatic, he's been predicting doom for U of I since seemingly the second round of the tourney, and finally he was saved at the end.

So, does May go number 1 now? As much as I want to see an Aussie go number 1, May's gotta be close assuming he declares.
(Yes, I am assuming Bogut goes number 1 anyway....)

If he goes number one, you might as well tag him as "Never Nervous" Part Deux. He needs serious work on his conditioning, and being able to muscle around James Augustine and Nick Smith won't mean much when he's suddenly running into Ben Wallace or Shaq. Someone will draft him, they'll draft him too high because he's a UNC guy and the media revolves around the ACC, but I really cannot foresee him becoming more than a serviceable backup big man in the NBA unless he really ramps up his physical skills. It seemed like every time I watched UNC play the announcers would mention how tired May looked after a few minutes of tough play. Now imagine him dealing with the 24 second shot clock and heightened skill level NBA pace.

On "Mike and Mike" this morning Fran Frischilla mentioned Corliss Williamson as the NBA player he's most like, and pretty much all agreed that he's most likely a mid-first rounder, even though it seems silly to think Marvin Williams could go #1 and May would go at #16, based on the last couple of nights, anyway. The name Carlos Boozer was also mentioned, and he went #35 despite the ACC-thing.

EDIT: All-in-all, was that the BEST tournament ever? The only round that was really a letdown in terms of the games was the National Semifinals, but the Regional Finals were all awesome and the Final was very entertaining.

This hurts, but congratulations to the Tar Heels. Also congratulations to Jaguar - you stuck with them through the rough times.

Now, with the maturity out of the way - Midnight Madness is only about 193 days away, look out for the 'Cats in '06.

So when are moving again. I'm looking forward to a UAB Blazers championship.

I didn't think that was anywhere close to the best tournament ever. Yeah the National Semifinals and Finals were great, but I thought the early rounds the past two years haven't been that good.

The Wyoming Cowboys still haven't won one in my absence, so I'm thinking the curse may be Carolina specific. I really hope UAB goes far though, I loved watching them play this year.

What can I say, I looooooove me some full court pressure defense.
