I thought the swerve would be that Jin could also speak English.
Also, I thought for sure the other "obvious" candidate for torching the raft would be revealed. Not who it really was.
And, as mentioned on teh DVDVR board, was that Hurley on the TV in the Secretary's apartment? My theory: it was that episode of Curb from last year. | Roy.

I was kinda depressed by it, myself. Poor Hurley doesn't have music anymore, and I took it to also mean that he was pretty danged lonely (and he's got some good taste: Damien Rice).
As for Hurley on TV, it's either an in-joke or it's going to set up his story. I'm guessing it's just a random in-joke. | Mayhem

I, too, saw Hurley on the TV set. I wondered if maybe they were showing some news story from Australia (or America) & Hurley just happened to be in the piece.
Hurley was in a lot of the previews for next week ... maybe this is his backstory week. I had thought it was going to happen in February, but I guess that's not happening. | thecubsfan

It's a reoccuring theme of the flashbacks to have a cameo of another survivor, which don't seem to mean much till without the context of their own flashback. Jin was waiting in line and looking at his watch (! or maybe I'm rembering false things) behind Jack when he was pleading the airline to put his father's casket on the plane, Sawyer was drunk and being arrested at the Sydeny police station when he wanted them to arrest his sister's boyfriend.
So, I bet Hurley being on TV will be explained next week.

Hurley is a multimillionaire due to winning the lottery. That probably explains his being on TV. His newfound riches are tempered by bad things happening to those close to him. Furthermore, his winning numbers show up as coordinates on a map that Sayid swiped from the French woman, leading Hurley on a jungle adventure. |

I still think Jin knows English, or at least understands well enough to know Sun when she says "gonna leave you". I loved the way the PTB tied in both Sun's flashbacks and Jin's.
I find it strange, the motivation for the freak-boy Walter to burn the boat. He doesn't want to move around? He almost gets mauled by a polar bear and he likes the island? People are getting kidnapped and killed...and he likes the island? He's old enough to know right from wrong...yeah? Am I missing something?
There was also this kind of 'make your new life' theme going on. Was Sun getting ready to say goodbye to life? I thought for a bit she was gonna jump in and keep swimming. Or was she getting cleansed by the ocean of her old life?
The more thought I put into this show the more confused I get. I LOVE this show! | Matt Tracker

Walt and his spooky powers, I think, have a lot to do with their present circumstance. I suspect he's behind the odd events wheteher he knows it or not. I even floated an early theory that everyone is dead, and Walt used his power at the last possible second to create a reality to avoid dying alone. | jonwscott

Great episode last night that again asked as many new questions as answered old questions. Jin knows english - he has to but I think it will be a while before it's revealed. Nice tie-in with Hurley on TV. And speaking of tie-ins, Charlie's band was heard in the background during a party scene on ALIAS earlier this season. | fuelinjected

Maybe he knows that because he didn't return with her that her father killed his father and that's why he's been so mean to her? | odessasteps

But then we see Jin going back to his dad before he left for the trip to Sydney, so we at least know he's alive prior to the plane crash. Unless Sun's father dug up the fact that Jin's father was actually alive, then sent some goons after him when he didn't return from the trip, I would guess he's still alive. If the preview is to be believed, Hurley really wasn't kidding when he told Walt he was good for the $100,000! (or whatever) he lost in backgammon - now it makes sense they randomlly brought that up last night too. |
I wish the awesomeness in the details translated to the major plots. To me, it doesn't take a whole lot of skill to throw out a whole lot of mysteries. The skill is in building up suspense (which they're good at), and the resolutions (which they haven't attempted much.)
