KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Los Angeles-based company plans to invest $50 million to build a new downtown arena, and hopes to bring an NBA or NHL team to Kansas City.
"I can assure you that there will be an anchor tenant," Timothy Leiweke, vice president of the Anschutz Entertainment Group, said Wednesday. "We have had conversations specifically with those leagues' franchises. I don't think there's a better time to get involved with a National Hockey League team than now."
The company is controlled by Philip Anschutz, a Denver billionaire who owns the Los Angeles Kings and several teams in Major League Soccer. Anschutz also owns part of the Los Angeles Lakers and their arena, Staples Center.
The 18,500-20,000-seat arena will cost $225-250 million and will be called the Sprint Center, after the suburban Overland Park, Kan.-based telecommunications firm, which has agreed to purchase the naming rights.
The National Association of Basketball Coaches will also invest $10 million in the project, and move its headquarters from Overland Park to the facility and open a college basketball hall of fame on site.
Private contributions will cover nearly half of the arena's total cost. The rest will come from assorted tax credits and license fees, including a $1.50 per occupied room per day hotel fee and $4 per day fee on rental cars. Mayor Kay Barnes said the project won't break ground until voters approve those two new fees, which will appear on the August ballot.
A consortium of several Kansas City-based sports architecture firms have said they plan to bid for the arena's design contract. Also expected the bid is a group led by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry.

Reposted on: 13.5.11 0931.21 | I don't forsee the NBA expanding again anytime soon and there are only so many teams if ANY that would be considered suspect for possible relocation. Possibly the Hawks since they're about to be put under new ownership, but the Clippers are going nowhere as long as Sterling owns the team. He's too much of a mark for L.A.
As for the NHL, Kansas City Penguins would take some getting used to, but then again I still call the St Louis Rams the LA Rams sometimes and it's been almost 10 years. :P

Wrong folder for this comment but: Of course its a great time to get involved in the NHL. You'll be able to claim you have an NHL team, and you don't have to worry about selling tickets or paying players until the 2009-2010 season (should it be a short work stoppage).
As for the NBA, the last thing the league needs is another team. I doubt Stern would let the Raptors leave and lose the entire Canadian market. However, should the Brooklyn arena deal fall through, the Nets could always be a possibility.

The Kings were in Kansas City for over 10 years before they moved to Sacramento, but I think it was just a case of the team being sold that prompted the city change. For awhile they were the "Kansas City-Omaha Kings."
They were also once the "Cincinnati Royals"
and, the "Rochester Royals"

Why'd they move???
Not surprisingly the Scouts struggled to draw fans forcing their 37 inventors who were almost a million dollars in debt to initiate a ticket drive. However, when the Scouts sold only 2,000 of their 8,000 season tickets sold goal they were forced to conclude that hockey would not work in Kansas City so the team was moved to Denver after just 2 seasons in Kansas City.
