He must have done something right because he won Coach of the Year and made the playoffs 3 out of 4 years with Tracy McGrady and a bunch of crap. Besides, the coach doesn't assemble the talent so you can't blame him for that. | redsoxnation

I celebrated the 80's. I think K.C. Jones is the most underrated coach in NBA history. I still claim the refs screwed them in Game 4 of '92 against Cleveland on a non-goal tending, a year after they screwed them in Game 6 against Detroit with a phantom goal tending against McHale in overtime. I put a bounty on a ref after Game 4 against Charlotte in '93. I threw a chair out of my dorm window in '95 when they got screwed in game 3 against Orlando. I sat through the 16-66 disaster with the hope of Duncan. I accepted Pitino despite my disgust with him from the summer of '87 when he said he would never leave Providence only to leave 2 days later and stick us with Chiesa. But, all of that was flushed down the toilet when they decided to hire a piece of flotsam and jetsam like Doc Rivers. Almost 30 years as a Celtics fan was destroyed by the nitwit Ainge and the half wit owners deciding to give the coaching position to a man who made racist comments about Larry Bird, the Celtics, and by extension Celtic fans in a book he wrote in the 90's. I'd accept Curtis Rowe and Sidney Wicks running the asylum before I'd cheer for a team with Doc Rivers.

But the man literally signed Hill when he was on crutches, and his injury never fully healed. So the Magic became Tracy McGrady, Gimpy Grant Hill and Ten Guys Who Suck. Plus, letting Darrell Armstrong go and putting one's faith in Shawn “Hamburgler” Kemp was a bad move, too.
I don't think it was Rivers' fault. I think the team was so badly put together that there was no way they were gonna get very far. And the players knew that, so they stopped listening to him.
I think Rivers will probably do OK in Boston, but the Celtics are still nowhere unless they build a better team. And thus far, none of Danny Ainge's personnel moves have made any sense. Which isn't surprising, seeing as how he made trades with the explicit purpose of forcing the Celtics to miss the playoffs so they could potentially get a better lottery pick. So he turned a team that could've contended for the Eastern Conference title this year into a team that got the living hell beaten out of them in four straight first-round playoff games.
Anyhoo... I'm now reading RedSoxNation's post, and I have to admit that I don't recall Doc Rivers' comments in his book. What'd he say, precisely? “Larry Bird wouldn't be nearly as popular if he were black,” or something like that? | DJ FrostyFreeze

I assume you're talking about "Those Who Love the Game"? Interesting ... Although I've never read the book myself, a little research shows there was a chapter called "Real Game: Race"; is that where the "offending comments" came from?
I find it hard to imagine that he would make such comments in a book that is advertised (according to said research) as "juvenile literature". Plus, none of the local papers are making any mention of it ... Are you sure you weren't allowing "green-tinted glasses" to paint the comments into something more than they actually were? It's okay, I've been guilty of that too in the past.
