| #1 Posted on 2.2.04 1148.51 Reposted on: 2.2.11 1149.01 | I was chatting with the manager at a local retailer (which shall remain unnamed, although it's a chain of retailers specializing in video games) about the plusses and minusses of getting a PS2 within the next few months, and he basically told me that they were utter crap, and my money would be better spent on an X-Box, which is incidentally cheaper.
I've seen my friends go through more PS2 consoles than any hardcore gamer went through NES consoles. In fact, one friends NES works better than his (third) PS2. He told me that this is probably because they set it on the vertical base, which was falsely advertised as a safe way to run your PS2 hardware, but in reality causes the laser lens to slip, and eventually not read anything at all.
Has anybody else heard anything on this? I'll probably go with the X-Box anyway for Halo 2, KoToR, and the GTA double pack (Nintendo refused to make GTA available for me ). Promote this thread! | | Excalibur05

| #2 Posted on 2.2.04 1156.48 Reposted on: 2.2.11 1158.15 | The laser lens issue is one I have never faced, but is apparently a fairly easy fix either by hand (though you would void your warranty by opening up the box) or by Sony. X-Box is really no better or worse in many, especially if you want to really make it better (i.e. adding a bigger hard drive or changing its OS), you have to jump through a bunch of hoops to try to hide your work from Microsoft, and you can forget about your warranty.
It all comes down to title library really. X-Box certainly has the better video quality and processing power, but PS2 has a much bigger and more quality game library from which to choose. If you're happy with just the games listed, great, but outside that you're not looking at much else, and there aren't many X-Box exclusive games outside of Halo 2 on the horizon worth a second look.

| #3 Posted on 2.2.04 1353.14 Reposted on: 2.2.11 1354.04 | I've heard it's a bad idea to use the PS2 vertically because the discs have a tendency to slip slightly and get all scratched up. Don't know about the laser problem or what causes it, but I was under the impression that as long as you haven't opened up the system or voided your warranty in another way, Sony will repair them from you.
And as for game store managers... out of everyone, everywhere, this group of people seems to have greatest difference in the ratio of opinions they spout versus what they actually know. Him calling a system crap (unless it's, say, the N-Gage) immediately calls his opinion into question in my mind.
But speaking of opinions, mine is that the only things XBox has going for it is the sharper picture quality, partial hdtv compatibility (not many games support this), the Halo franchise, Rockstar game ports (Midnight Club 2, the GTAs), and maybe the few decent Live games. It depends a lot on what types of games you like. PS2 does have a massive software library with a lot of good RPGs, strategy games, platformers, and pretty much every other genre.
On the other hand, the Xbox might be worth it if it does indeed drop to $99. | InVerse

| #4 Posted on 2.2.04 1405.22 Reposted on: 2.2.11 1405.27 | About the only real advantage the PS2 has over X-Box is the size of it's software library. However, this isn't really an advantage unless you intend to buy/rent a *lot* of games. For me, at least, there are more than enough good X-Box games to satisfy me. There are very few PS2 games that interest me that aren't already available (and usually better) on X-Box or PC.
If you're into emulation, X-Box (with a few modifications) also has the ability to emulate a LOT of systems. There are a few emulators that run on PS2, but they're not very advanced. I'm also a big fan of how several X-Box games will let you rip your music CDs to the X-Box hard drive and use those songs in place of the regular soundtrack. (Sure, you can just mute the game and play the CDs on your stereo but then you don't get the sound effects mixed in with the music.)
All in all, it comes down to how you're going to play. If you want to play several dozen good games, go with PS2. If you want to play a smaller number of games with superior graphics/sound/etc then go with X-Box. If you often have problems with people barging into your room/house and need something to block the door, go with X-Box. | James F'n X

| #6 Posted on 2.2.04 1610.26 Reposted on: 2.2.11 1610.56 | I think its just a comment about the fact that size matters(reverse what u are thinking).
I think the playstation library is better, Its not any less durable than xbox, despite what people say. More people own it so ofcourse there are more broken ones...But if you go on most xbox forums...lots of people have broken xboxes particulary the dvd drive in most of em. Plus the playstations crappy dull colors and textures make some games blurry enough to look more realistic(xbox likes shiny things).
Xbox..well its big and silly looking.. has a smaller game library...much better internet service, newtowrking, game saving(hardrive),downloads(from xbox magazine if you dont have live), and it has more possibilites for larger prettier games. Excaliber probally doesn't follow xbox games being made and I like his column so I wont heckle him...but there is allot more great stuff coming than you would think..Jade Empire, Fable, Ninja Gaiden, Kotor 2, Breakdown, B.c., RsC2 , True fantasy online, Otagi 2, Xmen Rpg, Doa online, Playboy mansion(haha), Not to mention all the mulitplatform games coming. American 3rd party devolpers are starting to take notice , I imagine the new Gta will be on xbox not too far after it's playstation debut(manhunt will be on the box next month according to OXM). Now all they need to do in convince the japenese that it's not a piece of crap lol.
On a side not...gamestop has Dreamcast for 20$

It seems to me that the big two games currently available *exclusively* on X-Box are Halo and KotOR (which I highly recommend!), and both of them are available for the PC. Other than that, the biggest thing the X-Box has going for it is Live, which is apparently pretty good if you have a broadband connection and don't mind another monthly subscription.
I have a PS2 and thus far haven't had any problems with it. I've kept it primarilly horizontal.
My advice is to make a list of the games you want to play (which you seem to have done with Halo 2 and KotOR and GTA), and then see which system's library best completes your list. There's no point to getting a *superior* system if it doesn't have the games you want to play.
(My advice is to get KotOR for PC and get a PS2, but I'm an anti-MS fanboy, so ignore this parenthetical aside.) | thatdude21601

Then again, you've got to remember that Nintendo's stuff is generally bulletproof. I haven't had any issues aside from unclean NES games.

While I have heard that keeping it horizontal can help increase the PS2's life, are your friends also remembering to turn the console off after each use? I don't mean hitting the button on the front, but reaching around behind the PS2 and turning of the switch in the back. Leaving it on is like leaving the PS1 plugged in while it is off- this will not only keep it from drawing power, but help extend its life. | LanceJr

Trust me stay away from RAW 2 on X-Box like the plague.
I have had my PS2 since it came out, and I have never had any problems with it. I do have it laying flat. I ended up getting an X-Box over the summer and I dont regret it, but I do find myself using PS2 more often. Example...If Square had gone back to Nintendo (completely, not just this new game) GC sales would have skyrocketed up JUST because of the Final Fantasy series.
So anyway, it's all up to your taste. I'd go with a PS2, cuz I really hate those Xbox controllers. | dMr

| #14 Posted on 3.2.04 1735.26 Reposted on: 3.2.11 1738.14 | As an owner of both of the marvellous litle things I'd have to side with the Xbox.
I got the PS2 primarily for SD:SYM (and partly because retail therapy rocks) but have really had little burning desire to go out and add many more games to my collection for it. Pro Evolution 3 (which is the single greatest soccer game on gods earth) and HCTP are my only recent purchases.
I never got the 'its got 150 GREAT games argument' simply because I can't afford 150 games. The vast majority of games I want are available on the XBox where they load quicker and look prettier.
That said, if you do get an XBox, RAW 2 is indeed pants though the joy of creating unbelievably fine tuned entrances does provide some entertainment.
Out of curiosity, are the snazzy silver PS2's any sturdier with regards the laser slipping? I know they're virtually silent which is quite appealing for the DVD aspect but if and when my current one breaks down I'd rather not replace it if the same shits just gonna happen again. | ALL ORIGINAL POSTS IN THIS THREAD ARE NOW AVAILABLE |
