So, we're down to seven unbeatens left in college ball. The pretenders (Georgetown) have been weeded out, and all of the unbeatens that are left seem legit. So who do you guys and gals think is the best of them out there? My rankings would have to go something like:

1. Wake Forest
1A. Pittsburgh
1AA. Stanford
4. Cincinatti
5. St. Joe's
6. Creighton
7. Miss. St.

Don't laugh at Pitt being that high, because it's not a regional bias, I truly believe they're one of the top five teams in the nation, along with Wake, UConn, Duke, and Stanford. I'd put St. Joe's higher, but outside of Delonte West and obviously Jameer Nelson, I don't see the strongest of supporting casts. Cincinatti could jump over Stanford if they completely dominate conference USA, and Miss. State could also be dangerous, because of the fact that they have Timmy Bowers, the best player you've never heard of.

In the end, I think Pitt will prove to be the best of them. They're strong, they play tremendous individual and team defense, and they don't get rattled by any environment or team. Don't be surprised to see them walk out of Storrs with a win next monday and a 19-0 record. Additionally, I can legitimately see the Big East or the ACC having 2 teams in the national title game. Pitt/UConn or Wake/Duke.

I'll wholeheartedly agree with you there...MSU could make some HUGE noise tonight at the Hump vs. Kentucky. I really don't see it happening though. They've got one of the best inside (Roberts) outside (Bowers) punches in the nation, but ANY Kentucky starter is capable of putting up 20 on you on any given night. UK by 12. This would be MUCH more interesting if Mario Austin would have stayed around for one more year...

It's still early and conference season is just getting underway...I have a feeling that at least 2 of the still unbeatens will be exposed as pretenders as well...

And thank you for not calling Vandy a pretender after being knocked off the unbeaten list Sat. night. :-)

I would rank them this way:

1. Wake Forest- by far the deepest and best team of the bunch. Well coached, solid perimeter play, and good post offense. Their defense is a bit spotty at times, which will hurt them in the long run.

2. Pittsburgh- I really like Pitt. They will give UConn a run for the Big East title. Only reason I don't have them ahead of Wake is because Wake has played a tougher schedule.

3. Stanford- I haven't seen Stanford at all, but they look solid and all the Bilas's and Vitale's of the world think highly of them.

4. St. Joe's- The best little school in the country right now. They can go 7 or 8 deep and play great defense.

5. Creighton- I saw the second half of one of their games the other night, another deep team with good shooters.

6. Cincinnati- I cannot stand the Bearcats, but lets face it, Huggins can coach. We will see how they do come conference play, because I think Louisville and Marquette are much better.

7. Mississippi State- I agree with Chuck, if Mario Austin had stuck around they would be shoe ins for the SEC West crown. The Bulldogs have yet to play anyone of note, but if they beat the Cats tonight I put them third ahead of Stanford.

I'd have Pitt as #3 in terms of unbeaten teams right now, behind Wake (who probably won't be unbeaten after this week) and Stanford. Stanford did go into Arizona and turn Lute's boys into their bitches, while Pitt has played 2 games out of town, one on a neutral site against a fair/good Alabama team, and a double overtime win against a below average Miami team. St. Joe's would be #4 in terms of unbeaten teams, but also the team with the best chance of being unbeaten the longest, as the A-10 is down this year.

I'd actually rank them a little bit differently - starting from the bottom and working up.

7: Creighton. Unfortunately for them, they haven't really played anyone (beat Nebraska at home, beat Illinois State - barely). They're still a strong team, but being a mid-major hurts their strength of schedule big-time (who will they play in-conference? Everyone's going to be a big upset if they lose).

6: Miss. St. If Cincy and MSU keep winning, 5 and 6 might switch, but MSU falls in the same category as Creigton (home win against UAB biggest win, RPI-wise). Bowers is Mario Austin, version 2, from what I understand. Their real tests begin with conference play; unlike Creighton, they have statement wins coming up (if they can snag them).

5: Cincinnati. I'll admit, I don't like them. However, C-USA is looking deeper than ever this year, and winning in-conference will do wonders for them. No big wins yet hurts 'em. What surprises me about them is they seem to have nothing year after year ... but this year, Huggins says he actually likes his team (first time in, oh, forever). Does that scare you?

4: Pitt. Yeah, I know it's odd. But who have they played? Alabama? There's a reason ESPN calls them W1E (Worst No. 1 Ever) - they'll start off great, then bomb out. Murray St. won't stay in the top 50, and Florida St. can't hold on that strong. (Now, once more basketball teams come in, then the ACC can support multiple strong teams; otherwise, they'll just kill each other off. This isn't a knock on FSU.) Actually, I'm temped to put them 5th.

3: St. Joe's. You play their non-conference (4th in SOS right now) and see if you can come out undefeated. If they can beat Xavier, they're looking at either a 2 or 3-loss season.

2: Wake. It's hard putting them here - Wake and Stanford are so close. They're a spectacular team, with a huge win at UNC (but that's nothing new to Prosser anyway). I'd put money on them over most other teams right now, except for ...

1: Stanford. They've been playing without Josh Childress, and are still undefeated. All of their statement wins have come on the road, too (at 'Zona, neutral-court over Kansas and Gonzaga). That's more than enough to win me over - although Wake's likely to unseat them, due to a stronger conference offering opportunity for better wins.

Not only that but Pitt has played all their games at home with the exception of 2 road games. Talk about giving yourself an easy schedule. But they did play Georgetown, Kentucky that is.

All things considered this year, Georgetown Kentucky is probably a better opponent than that "other" Georgetown.

Down to five now as both Mississippi State and Wake Forest went down last night.

Two more playing tonight. Cincinnati has a tough one at Marquette, while Creighton plays Northern Iowa.

Who will stay unbeaten longest? Depending on schedules, I would say St Joes or Creighton. Their leagues are weaker than the rest.

Stanford is the best of the lot right now, but as we all know, the college hoops season is long and the best teams at the end are not necessarily the best teams right now.

Once again Kentucky starts strong and fades. Props to MSU for playing a great second half. UK cannot beat a team like Florida if they continue to jump out to early leads and then give it right back.

That game last night was frustrating. I really thought that the 'Cats were going to hold the ship and win by 15 or so but they simply imploded down the stretch. MSU did play an excellent game and I'll give them all the credit in the world, but we did accomodate them a good bit. It took 2 1/2 SEC games last year for everything to gel, so I'm keeping my hopes up that the mid-game swoons go away.

In keeping with the thread, I think that Stanford is probably the best of the unbeatens (they did beat a # 1 ranked team) and would be followed by Cincy, Pitt, St. Joes, and Creighton.

Of course I had the pleasure of seeing this transformation LIVE IN PERSON...thanks for reminding me :-)

And hey...a road win in the SEC, whether it be by 1 or 50, is soooo hard to come by. Congrats on the thrilling win. I'm not particularly sold on MSU just yet (no offense to any MSU fans who are lurking). Kentucky just wore down and couldn't do ANYTHING right.

Down to 3 after Pitt fell to UConn last night...

St Joes - 15-0

Cincinnati - 13-0

Stanford - 14-0

Cinci gets a tough test at Louisville on Wednesday, followed by Southern Miss on the road.

Stanford has UCLA and USC this week.

St Joes gets UMass at home, followed by the Bonnies.

At the end of this week there should be only 2 left.

St Joes at 17-0 and Stanford at 16-0.

St. Joe's has a legitimate shot at finishing the season undefeated...That would more than likely make them a #1 seed and the best chance ever that a #16 seed has of knocking off a #1...not saying St. Joe's is bad, they're very good...just that they might be the weakest #1 of all time...this is all of course IF they finish undefeated.

I'm hoping that Holy Cross finally gets the job done and offs North Carolina at the #1/#16 matchup this season. They almost got Roy Williams before when he was at Kansas. I want Williams to go down as the first (only?) coach that lost to a 16 seed.

I've missed something Jag, I thought you were a big Tar Heel fan. What gives? Do you just not like Williams? Did you not like bringing a coach in from Kansas? Did you think that Doherty was given the shaft?

The answer to all three would be: Yes.

I'm a firm supporter of Matt Doherty. He might not have been the best coach, but he was screwed because of politics at UNC and the fact that Roy was tired of being at Kansas. It doesn't help that they never could have fired him if Sean May didn't get hurt.

Anyway, while I wasn't going to support Roy or Carolina this season, I was going to give them a chance to win me back. But Roy's an asshole. He hasn't had a good word to say about this team yet (and still the Chapel Hill newspapers praised him for filling a whole interview with the word FRICKING! Hooray! He didn't say that they were fucking pathetic!), and he's just not "The Second Coming" that everyone hoped he'd be.

So I'd definitely like him to go down in flames.

-Jag

I've been rooting for Wake this season (even after the last three games ). For better or for worse, I just don't think I support a Roy Williams coached team.

Added: Can you tell I take my college hates/loves/rivalries seriously? Of course, my girlfriend of three years (Feb 2nd! Woo!) almost dumped me after Wake beat Carolina in overtime. We're a little crazy down here in the Triangle.

But, how do you really feel about Williams? :-)

I understand the passion for the game. I despise Eddie Sutton for the mess he made in Lexington. I'm afraid that the bluegrass is just as crazy if not crazier, if you were to go to any UK message board (without knowing records or results) you'd think that the Wildcats were 2-95, that Tubby not only couldn't recruit McDonald's AAs, but had trouble recruiting 3rd team all-county players.
