Okay, the game is now at the midway point. And even time I turn the TV back to the game from watching Smackdown, the US is on a power play.

What's up with that?

Is Canada playing that "chippily" or is this some hometown officiating (a la Ohno)?

Edit: For the record, it was eight penalties in a row. And the referee (only one ref in the Olympics and two linespeople) is indeed American.

Where's Chris Jericho? Another potential Conspiracy Victim brewing.

In my life, I've never seen such poor officiating in a hockey game. 13 penalties called by the American ref. How is that allowed?

But no matter-Canada won the Gold in a gutsy performance. Simply incredible.

I am SO proud of those girls. Despite being a heavy underdog and despite a PATHETICALLY BIASED referee, Canada defeats the USA 3-2 to win the gold medal in women's hockey.

I was pissed BEFORE the game started that they were allowing an American to ref the game, I was FURIOUS during the game when Canada had to attempt to kill off 8 power plays IN A FRICKIN ROW, and was ready to buy Livingston (the name of the American referee) a plane ticket to Russia to meet the ref of Game 8 of the 1972 Canada/Russia Summit Series since it was OBVIOUS to me that he was her mentor when she called a complete SHIT penalty - the THIRTEENTH against Canada (compared to a scattered 6 for the Americans) with FOUR MINUTES left in the game - a power play which the Americans scored on to make the game 3-2 (it was only a matter of time - how the hell they killed off 11 of the 13 penalties is beyond me).

Maybe 5 of Canada's penalties were deserved. MAYBE. I'm being AWFULLY generous when I say that.

How in the HELL could the IIHF have allowed this? It was Canada/USA four years ago, it's been Canada/USA in the finals of EVERY women's hockey world championship for the last SEVEN YEARS so, and *gasp* it was Canada/USA in the Gold Medal game here. OH MY GOD WHAT A SHOCK. Yet you still have an American referee?!? PATHETIC.

But you know what happened?

The worse the refereeing got, the more PISSED OFF the Canadian girls got. The bias BACKFIRED, and it served to inspire our girls to play one of the best games they've ever played in their lives.

The USA women's team was 35-0 this year coming into this game.

They'd beaten the Canadians 8 STRAIGHT coming into this tournament.

The US goalie had a GAA of ZERO coming into this game.

the US team draped a Canadian flag on the floor of their dressing room before the game - rumour has it they walked all over it - but that's just a rumour...right?

Canada 3, USA 2.

And Hayley Wickenheiser said it best after the game. "The US draped our flag in the middle of their dressing room - well NOW, I wanna know if they want us to sign it."

I'm SO damn proud of them.

For the record - I'd have been JUST as mad at the start of the game if the ref had been Canadian. There should have been NO Americans and NO Canadians (don't know the nationality of the linesmen - women - whatever) officiating in that game whatsoever. They were just INVITING controversy upon themselves. Maybe they figured "Ah well, the Canadians whined and bitched enough about the figure skating, maybe they'll let this go." Oh suuure, we'll let biased officiating against our country in a HOCKEY GAME go without notice.

Guru may love it when a plan comes together - but I love it even more when a plan - especially one of bias during a sporting event - comes apart. Way to go, girls - you RULE THE WORLD.

The ref for that game was from Utica, NY.

HOW THE HELL DOES THE IIHF ASSIGN AN AMERICAN REFEREE TO THE GOLD MEDAL GAME BETWEEN CANADA AND THE US?

Seriously, how? I can safely say I've never seen a game called so one-sided.

And BrewGuy, the Americans did NOT walk on our flag. It was placed there to "remind" the team who they were playing, and they respectfully did not walk on it.

Shawn Michaels, on the other hand...

Good to know. Thanks for passing that along - I apologize for implying the rumour was true - I was juuust a little hot under the collar at the time. :)

The only explanation for the ref being American or Canadian would be that the only half-decent womens refs are from there.

Not too outrageous to think so, considering the state of the womens game. (US and Canada domination)

Don't get me wrong, I completely agree that the ref was brutal.

Let's hope the intensity and desire of the women translates to the rest of the mens games...

GO CANADA GO!!!!

Brew - my hearty congratulations on a fantastic game by the Canadian women. As my wife and I were watching the game (here in Maine, which is technically part of the US), we found ourselves cheering for the Canadians. They truly deserved to win the gold!

Plus, the Canadian women edged out the US women for bronze in curling also. What a day!

What's really funny is reading the American "reporters" reporting of the game talking about the U.S had a lot of chances and just missed out. And not mention word one about the god-awful officiating (well except for very few places).

It was cool seeing Alanis Morrisette cheering on the Canadian girls

The officiating in that game SUCKED ASS. Total ass was sucked, in terms of officiating. I swear the the ref was doing his best Nick Patrick impersonation.

But Canada still prevailed 3-2. I said it before I'll say it again, NEVER bet against a women's ice hockey team that has both Kim St. Pierre and Hayley Wickenheiser on it, among other great players.
