As a New Yorker, this is great news since it would mean 4 of the 5 NYC boroughs would have at least 1 professional sports team should they move to Brooklyn.

Weren't the Nets originally in Nassau Coliseum during their ABA days?

Actually they started life as the New Jersey Americans in Teaneck, NJ. Then became the New York Nets in Commack, then W. Hempstead before going to Nassau in 1971, before moving to Rutgers/Piscataway and becoming the NJ Nets in '77 before landing in the Meadowlands(Thanks InfoPlease).

I like the sound of the Brooklyn Nets, I hope for their sake they go to where the fans will be. It was a shame they didn't seel out all thier playoff games.

Unfortunately for them, I think as long as they are in the NYC area they are always going to play 2nd fiddle to the Knicks. No matter how well they do or how bad the Knicks do.

That's true of every NY team. The Yankees are higher than the Mets, the Rangers are higher than the Islanders, and the Giants and Jets....well, they don't apply since they don't really play in New York anyway. :)

Right now they are playing in upper NJ, so lower NJ doesn't really care. And they are so close to Philly they lose fans there as well. I think they would have more fan support in NY than in NJ. The way the front office of the Knicks is acting now the Nets could steal alot of fans. Though if both are good, the fans will go with the Knicks. At least they won't face a climb like the Clippers!

I can't speak for the Hockey teams as I don't really follow it that much anymore (a big "FUCK YOU" goes out to Jeremy Jacobs for that) but the Mets do have a strong following in NY and sell out when they do well. Same can be said of the Giants and Jets. The Jets especially have a rabid following and usually support them no matter how good or bad they are.

Going back to hockey, it seemed to me the Devils had sellouts during their playoff run to the cup. The Nets seem to be the only NYC area team that has trouble getting fans to show up, even though they've gone to the NBA Finals two straight years.

Brooklyn is no closer to MSG than the Meadowlands is. I think the main reason is that NYC has had at least 2 teams in every sport for many decades except Basketball. The Knicks have been in the NBA since the beginning. The Nets won a few titles in the ABA but until Kidd joined the team they have stunk for most of their NBA history, plus they will always be known as the team that gave Dr. J away. Probably the dumbest move in pro sports history after the Red Sox giving away Babe Ruth.
