The NBA's Shock of the Day:

http://espn.go.com/nba/news/2003/0530/1561275.html

So let me get this straight...the guy won 50 games in a season, won Coach of the Year, got his team to the Conference Finals and all WITHOUT a "big name scorer" and Rick Carlisle STILL gets fired?! What a fucking joke! I'm hoping the Pistons take a big nosedive next season out of spite. I didn't think any team could top the Hornets for sheer stupidity after they fired Paul Silas, but the Pistons take the cake by a huge margin.

Man, and I thought UCLA was strict with their coaches.

I have to agree with you 100 per cent. Didn't he win the Coach of the Year award 01-02? I hope they fall to Nugget style ineptitude.

I would hope that too, except there doesn't look like any way that'll be happening soon, with adding Darko to a 50-win team. Plus they said maybe they wanted to get Larry Brown. I guess they'd better if that was why they fired Carlisle.

The silver lining for Rick Carlisle is that he is now free to sign a BIG money deal. Maybe with a promising team like Houston.

I agree that this move seems odd on Detroit's part. If it ain't broke...

Is Joe Dumars taking management tips from Matt Millen? ESPN says the Pistons are really close to a deal with Larry Brown, but I don't really understand why they'd give up on Carlisle. Unless the Pistons rolling over and dying to Jersey really got to Dumars. Carlisle was a good coach who never had great talent on his teams, so I don't see why they'd fire him when the team's first real star player was on the way. I like Larry Brown, but he sure as hell better put this team over the top, or the Pistons are going to look really stupid.

If they were firing Carlisle for a championship coach, then perhaps it could be considered understandable. But for a coach whose specialty is building up bad teams and then bailing out after they become respectable/good, it makes no sense. Let's see, in his two seasons, Carlisle's teams have gone 1 round further than Brown's teams in each season. Something really must be screwed up in the water in Detroit.
My guess on where Carlisle lands: Indiana. If they have any common sense, Isiah would already be looking to buy a new league to fold, and Carlisle would be in the position he should have had when Bird left.

Hey, who won that Pistons/Sixers series again?

HINT: It wasn't Larry Brown.

If it was Detroit firing Carlisle to get, say, Phil Jackson, I'd understand it.

Let me go on record, Redsoxnation, as saying that I would love for Rick Carlisle to return to the Pacers, this time as their head coach.

He came recommended from Larry Bird, after all. But Donnie Walsh, in his infinite wisdom, chose Isiah Thomas instead. I don't think Zeke is a bad coach, but Carlisle is better.

Since this is the "Coaching Changes" thread, ESPN is reporting that Paul Silas will become coach of the Cavs.

That's a great move by the Cavs. Silas is a good coach to develop LeBron and get him accustomed to the NBA. Now all they have to do is trade Ricky Davis.

Apparently, Carlisle has a bit to strict with the players and rubbed a lot of the m the wrong way. People also wondered about how he divied up playing time. The 2 playoff stars were nonexistant during the regular season and he was almost forced to play them in the playoffs.

On the other hand, they now have Larry Brown, super-genius. Hahahahaha. Just wait Pistons fans, here comes Tyrone Hill and Larry cast of nontalented players. Before everyone raves about how he likes developing with young players take a look at the Sixers drafts under him and tell me how many of those picks he traded and how many he developed. He will have this promising team dismantled in a year.

The knock on Carlisle is that he supposedly had an abrasive personality, and he ndid not have any supporters in management. Some of the local sports press indicated that there was a major personality conflict between Carlisle and Dumars.

In local tv interviews, Dumars was purposely ambiguous regarding what Carlisle did wrong. He also stated that there are three elite coaches in the NBA: Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, and Larry Brown. (?) Rudy Tomjonovich, Gregg Popovich, and Lenny Wilkens were unavailable for comment.

I really dont get the Larry Brown love. Sure he's good at taking young teams and developing them into playoff teams, but by my count he is 0-for-6 when it comes to titles, and only oncs made it to the finals. Detroit is already a playoff team, and Carlisle got the job done.

Its possible we could see a true coaching carousel, with Brown going Philly-to-Detroit, Carlisle Detroit-to-Portland, and Cheeks Portland-to-Philly.

Now there is an article today about how the BLAZERS might want Carlisle. Maybe he could punk Rasheed right out. It seems like he would be a 180-degree change from Cheeks.

There was all kind of speculation about the Blazers not letting Cheeks go because he has the best image on the team after bailing out that girl during the national anthem. I think they would heave a better Coach in Carlisle, but they really need to change the real problem there: the players.

WEll in all this mess I will have to say kudos to Joe Dumars once again. I don't know much about the Carlilse-Dumars relationship but it was the president's decision to get rid of him, not Dumars. So Dumars was stuck between a rock and a hard place. So what does he do? Go out and get the best coach available (or so a lot of people think, I prefer both Van Gundy and Silas).

As for Phil Jackson? No way. He wouldn't win there because the Pistons don't have the two best players in the league.

The Carlisle situation keeps getting better.

http://espn.go.com/nba/news/2003/0603/1562732.html

I'd LOVE to see Carlisle take the reigns for the Clippers. Imagine what he could do with that young talent and hopefully he can motivate Andre Miller. If Donald Sterling doesn't screw things up, I could see the Clippers becoming a playoff team next season.

Pretty good offseason so far for the Clippers and Cavs, the NBA's two perrenial punching bags.

Being from the Detroit area, I questioned this quite a bit....but so far, Dumars has done no wrong and been able to "fix" anything that upper management has thrown his way, so I'll give this latest odd decision at least a chance before I start bitching about it.

Well, somebody in the Pistons organization must be doing something right. The Pistons actually got better when Grant Hill left, so maybe they could make the Finals with Larry Brown at the helm instead of Carlisle. Does the Patrick Ewing theory apply to coaches as well?
