BOSTON (AP) - Boston Globe sports columnist Bob Ryan was suspended without pay for a month Tuesday for saying on television that Jason Kidd's wife needed someone to "smack her." "Bob Ryan's comments were a clear and egregious violation of the standards of The Boston Globe," Globe editor Martin Baron said in a statement. "Bob has been told in no uncertain terms that his remarks were offensive and unacceptable."
Ryan also was barred from appearing on radio or television for one month.
New Jersey Nets coach Byron Scott urged the Globe to fire Ryan, who made the comments Sunday night on WBZ-TV's "Sports Final" show before the Nets and Celtics began their Eastern Conference semifinal series.
Kidd, the Nets' All-Star guard, said Boston fans insulted his wife and 3-year-old son during the playoffs last season. Kidd was taunted with chants of "wife beater," referring to 2001 charges, later dropped, that he hit his wife, Joumana.
Ryan made the comments as he and host Bob Lobel talked about the rematch and whether the Kidds will receive similar treatment when the teams go to Boston for Game 3 on Friday.
Ryan said Kidd should expect taunts from the crowd, then criticized the Kidds for using their son "as a prop" and called Joumana Kidd an "exhibitionist."
Then, in a comment that was not picked up clearly on tape, he said: "Oh, great. I mean she needs (inaudible) to smack her."
Lobel immediately interrupted Ryan, asking him to retract the statement.
"You just don't want to smack her, you don't mean to say that. No, do you, really? Tell me you don't," Lobel said.
"Why should I say anything different than I said all last playoffs last year," Ryan said.
But in a statement Tuesday, Ryan apologized for the "inappropriate and offensive remark."
"It was, of course, atrocious judgment on my part," he said. "I wish to state clearly that I am aware of the very real problem of violence against women in our society, and that in no way is it a joking matter."
Scott said Ryan "should be out of a job."
"Just tell him to come right in here and he can say that in front of me and Jason and some of our players," Scott said at practice in East Rutherford, N.J. "He'll see how well he'll be received."
Jason Kidd called the comments "unfortunate" and said his wife "felt sorry if she offended (Ryan) in any way."

What's great is that the local Fox affiliate here is helpfully reminding us of all the Globe's past scandals (Mike Barnicle, Patti Smith for plagiarism). | redsoxnation

Now, up until the Smack her statement, Ryan was 1000% correct, as Kidd's wife is a media whore. Weird that Ryan's punishment for making a comment about her is far more severe than precious little Jason's was for whacking her around. Now, I have to go a month without Ryan on TV or radio. Byron Scott is a blowhard whose opinion is less than worthless. He is now a media human resource manager, head coach of the Nets and Knicks, and the man who was the only reason the Lakers won championships in the 80's. Just ask Byron, he'll tell you that and more. As for the wife beater/breaker of his child's collarbone: If he thought the crowd in Boston last year was rough, now its going to be much, much worse. An 8 o'clock game on a Friday, no game again until Monday night, and the mental framework of many Boston fans being slightly unhinged by the Red Sox bullpen can create an extremely nasty atmosphere. | RYDER FAKIN

Over on the Politics board everyone is goddamn hyper about some German word for “ha ha…glad he got his!” That word to me is as possibly annoying as “bling bling”, but they have a good point. I couldn’t wish worse on someone in that trade than Ryan.
To (paraphrase) and quote…
His Sports Reporter closing thoughts are on Vince and WWF, circa 2000…going of on how much society is for the worse because 5 million (ha!) people watched wrestling…
“Vince McMahon, the owner of the World Wrestling FOUNDATION”…
and he continued on with his diatribe about how wrestling is doing more damage to the society than three Holocosts and oh hell, if anyone can find the transcripts to this, you know where to find me.
Before I start sounding like Meltzer and cry every time someone badmouths wrestling, this is only the tip of the iceberg with Ryan and his moronic screeds. PalpantineW was correct…BLOWHARD, but he should have added several other words…
My wish is that he covers Women’s JV Volleyball until Jimmy the Greek rises from the grave and gives 8-1 that if the Interviewer had a second chance he would have kept his mouth shut and waited for Ryan to call her a “porchmonkey”. Wouldn’t be his first time.
And fuck him and his eulogy to The Greek. If they hang Ryan up by his toenails, I’ll TRANCRIBE that one…

I can't say I hate Bob Ryan, just irrated by him and his sucking on Jordan's cock for the last fifteen years expect this season where Bob had the nuts to tell to go packing. You are five years too late pal.
I used to watch Sports Reports all the time, but with Dick Shape's death, the show has lost its appeal as does any of the sports reporting shows. Bob was the typical Boston guy which means he has no clue what is going on. He remembers the glory days of the Celtics even though the Lakers owned them during the 80s. Yet, he can't shut up about stuff.
The last slap her comment comes kinda out of nowhere since I didn't expect anyone to be this cruel to a man's wife. I just shows that the typical tasteless fans that Boston is noted for. It also doesn't help that Ryan is fan first, objective reporter second. I find it more intriguing that most of these guys always pull for the home and try to stir shit through the series to help gain an advantage to rigging of the games. I have lost the ability to care what sports reporters think since its their job just to recap and thats about it. Save the human interest and scandel to the real reporters and fluff guys. I say shut and put up some box scores.

I've heard a LOT worse, too. It doesn't take away from Ryan's ability as a journalist, nor from his knowledge of sports, both of which are top-notch. Ryan's a passionate writer and speaker, cares about what he does for a living, and isn't afraid to speak his mind. I respect that a hell of a lot more than the 99% of "sports" journalists who are A) shills for the management of the team they're covering, or B) biding their time in the sports section until they can "graduate" to the entertainment section or the business section or the spooge section or whatever they're REALLY interested in. Ryan's a welcome break from all of the automated, disinterested, and passionless talking heads that have taken over the TV airwaves.
I'm not shocked to learn that he made a small mistake in judgment. I guess that makes him human like everyone else. I'm disappointed, but not shocked.
"He remembers the glory days of the Celtics even though the Lakers owned them during the 80s."
... The Lakers won two Finals against Boston, 1985 and 1987; and lost to Boston in 1984. That hardly classifies as "owning" the Celtics. The Lakers won more championships during the 80's because the East was a tougher conference in that decade -- the Lakers' road to the Finals was far easier than the Celtics' road. | tomvejada

Kidd having been accused of beating his wife, with Celtics fans having given Joumana Kidd hell a couple of years ago. The bottom line is this: Bob Ryan said something very stupid and got busted for it. Sportswriters like Ryan, Lupica, Frank Deford and Bill Rhoden get ideas that their thoughts come directly from the Hand of God after awhile. "The Sports Reporters" sometimes began to look like a re-enactment of the Last Supper. Big-time sportswriters egos get SO huge they begin to think that they are allowed to say whatever they want because controversy breeds readership. Then, they find out the hard way that controversy also breeds unpaid suspensions.
Memo to redsoxnation: No more mentions of the bullpen please. I'm losing enough sleep as it is.

ESPN vice president Mark Shapiro has stated Bob Ryan will be back once his Globe suspension is over and he's allowed to do media appearances again. As for Greg Anthony, his credibility was lost long ago when he was involved in a bench clearing brawl against Phoenix and he participated while he was in street clothes. Bad enough the shirt he was wearing should have put him in jail by the fashion police, but to involve himself in an altercation while he was 'injured' should have gotten him a 1 year suspension. | tomvejada

I just love personal attacks. Very mature. Now, back to Ryan. I said he was right up UNTIL the point he said he would smack her. That was wrong. But, using your logic, Ryan gets killed for saying something bad about Kidd's wife, but Kidd is a hero because he actually did what Ryan said to his wife (and broke his kid's collarbone in public). If I did, I would love for you to point it out for me. Besides the last person I would pick in the world as a hero would be an athelete. Not saying anything against them as a whole, but they are no more than normal human beings to me. I abhor what Kidd did with his wife, any man that would hurt a woman or a child is less than a man.
As far as what you call a personal attack being mature....it's about as mature as Ryan making a personal attack on a mans wife, who as far as I know has never done one thing, or even said one thing to him. Seems to me that your love for anything Boston is clouding your vision.
My point is that YOU DON'T FUCK WITH A MANS FAMILY!!! And if you do, at least be a man about it and do it to his face!!! As a said before it was a cowardly thing to do. Who's lauding Kidd as a hero? You realize he had to leave Phoenix because of the backlash after the arrest and that he would have been suspended had he not taken a leave of absence?
And really, you make it sound like Kidd wanted to break his son's collarbone. You might want to clarify that he did it accidentally while diving for a ball. | cactuspete

Sportswriters/analysyts/radio hosts are encouraged to say things that are controversial, offensive and sometimes just plain stupid. Thats what draws in more ratings/ad sales.

He tried to make a joke and was wrong. But for those who attack every fiber of the guy when they have their own skeletons in the closet is just dumb. Criticize him for this because he deserves it. And Joumana being abused before just makes this a uneasy story to hear.
I think Jason Kidd is worst because he actually hit her before. Every time I see him all I can think is "I wonder if he has hit his wife again?". However him and Joumana seem to have worked things out, it's their life and they are the only ones who can say if they are right for each other.
On a personal note I think a man hitting a woman is disgusting and wrong. I'm not offended when someone makes a joke about it though, when it's know that it's a joke. That is unless I knew of someone who made a joke about smacking his girl and that person has either hit a women or has been rumored to have hit women. Then I would be thinking of kicking the shit out of said person.
People who made the digs on the Boston sports scene are stupid or jealous, or both.
It was nice to see Kidd respond with class.
