The Bullet Club and mainly The Young Bucks have been doing a WWE parody/tribute/spin on The Attitude era for years now. They sell a ton of merchandise and are generally regarded as the smartest "independent" wrestlers around. Well, in case you missed it on Monday they did their own version of the DX Invasion outside of Raw. The WWE finally has had enough apparently and sent a cease and desist on the Too Sweet hand signal. The Bucks have not taken this news well.

This might seem petty, and maybe it is but I have to side with WWE on this one. They've given The Bullet Club and Bucks a tremendous amount of leash and The Invasion, which seemed dopey as it was happening, was really rubbing WWE's noses in it. I don't know if WWE has a legitimate case here or not, but they just threw a chin high fastball at that pesky hitter who always crowds the plate.

In the end I think everyone will be fine, maybe this is the push The Bullet Club and Bucks need to change up their act or maybe they get bitter and double down. The Invasion was a terrible miscalculation on their part though and they are going to have to figure out the next step.

Hmm..how can they trademark a hand gesture? Thats fucking stupid. It is petty and was moronic not to acknowledge them invading. It was the only reason I watched Raw til the end.

Bullet Club needs to change while we are going to do Reigns/Lesnar at Mania?!

The hand symbol itself..can that be copyrighted? Or is this in combination with "when used in wrestling, while doing xyz"

I wonder how NJPW feels about this.
Actually I wondered about that for a while.
BC is New Japan's property I assume.
The Bucks and Omega call themselves Elite for a reason, they probably own that part.
If WWE finds a way to stop BC from doing their thing, it will cost NJPW money, not the Bucks and Omega.
THey just move on to their next 'silly' catchphrase.

For those that watched G1's match between Tonga and Omega..Tonga was very pissed off at Omega for wearing Elite and not Bullet Club gear. They hugged it out but if NJPW so desires it'll pretty easy to create a rift and create a BC red & black story and distance themselves from any legal mess.

The Young Bucks have played their cards well lately, but possibly this has backfired a bit for them. I can see why they did it, but they must have also thought it might not have gone well as Vince et al don't like it happening to them.

Bucks have great matches and use Twitter brilliantly. Marty Scurll is great and I am glad to have seen him a few times here in the UK at our local school hall, but he has come on so much in the last year and love seeing it and where it will end. Page catches your attention and want to see more of him/them all together. Cody still doesn't interest me and don't see that changing anytime soon as he never has.

I think that wrestling fans are going to love what they are doing, and rightly so. WWE can come out of this looking bad and showing they are worried by what they can do with a hand gesture. Interesting to see what happens next.

So, wouldn'tcha think that, if WWE were actually serious, they would have taken down this article (wwe.com) from their own website, where AJ asserts that it was originally from NC State.

Silliness.

AJ STYLES: Everybody wants to take responsibility for it. Obviously, The nWo. If we want to go way back, who did The nWo get it from?

    LUKE GALLOWS: Japan?

STYLES: Wrong. No, no, no, no, no. NC State. [The North Carolina State Wolfpack]

GALLOWS: [Scoffs] Who cares about that?

STYLES: That’s the Wolfpack. That’s a Wolf Kiss, bro.

GALLOWS: That’s stupid. We’re talking about sports-entertainment, brother.

STYLES: Hey, back off, man. Anyway, that’s where it came from, in my head. Therefore, I think it’s legal for everybody to use it and have a good time with it.

I'm not certain that WWE is super worried about the optics here. The fact of the matter is that everybody in Bullet Club new they were doing NWO and DX stuff, that was the point. And the sure as shit knew who owned all that stuff. WWE didn't give a shit until the Bucks gave them a reason to, and now everyone's acting surprised that WWE did the thing everyone expected them to do years ago.

According to Meltzer the WWE did trademark the hand gesture so I guess that's a thing that's possible but they didn't trademark it until 2015 when they signed Balor, Anderson and Gallows and thought about using it for a Balor Club stable. The Bucks have been doing it since 2013. A court would likely side with the Bucks but going against the WWE in a long, drawn out case is probably not something the Bucks would want to do.

Personally I take the WWE's side on this but maybe that's because I think it's pretty lame that Bullet Club/Bucks act like this edgy revolutionary group but are just blatantly copying stuff from the Attitude Era. Let's get a cease and desist for the crotch chop too please. That hasn't been cool in 20 years and any nostalgia for it was destroyed when old man Hunter and old man Shawn brought it back 2 or 3 times.

On a sidenote, Gene Simmons filed a trademark for his devil horns hand gesture that he says he originated in 1974 earlier this year, but withdrew it when there was an uproar that that hand gesture means like a million things ranging from satan worship to I love you in sign language.

I'm no trademark expert or copyright lawyer, but I thought if you don't defend your trademark you lose it. A quick google search ( http://www.betalaw.info/can-lose-trademark-rights-dont-sue-infringers/ )tells me that in this, our digital age, you don't have to defend every single instance of trademark infringement, but you can't ignore it if it is right in your face. Like say, if guys show up to your place of business and start using your trademarked hand gesture and phrase. If WWE didn't want to lose their trademark, they didn't really have any choice.
