Finally something noteworthy happened on Smackdown.

Let us all discuss this Roman Reigns promo.

AHHHHHHHH

This was skin-crawlingly cringey on the level of watching a David Brent/Larry David scene play out. It seems like every line of dialogue they've given him is accompanied by the stage direction [very charismatically]. And he recites it all as comfortably as if there are snipers aiming at him making sure he gets it out word perfect.

Between this and the Superman promo on Monday, it's been a scintillating week for the Juggernaut on the mic. Those geek-ass writers and their lack of an authentic wrestling voice, right? Actually, Dave Meltzer says that Vince McMahon has been personally writing Roman Reigns' promos.

This is good if only to imagine how it looked when Vince rehearsed the promo before SmackDown.

Also on the show, Barrett did a clean job to Sin Cara, since the IC title is a joke.

Not even the Rock could make "sufferin' succotash" sound cool. I would truly like to know what goes on in Vince's head when he thinks that quoting 60-year-old cartoons is the key to getting over his supposed new face of the company.

I have so much more respect for Roman Reigns after this promo. He carried the weight of that terrible dialogue on his shoulders and carried it to the finish line like a champ.

This is absolutely not the sort of stuff this character should be saying. He needs to study Mike Tyson, Sycho Sid, the Ultimate Warrior and the other poets of our time to create dialogue worthy of someone who should be ripping heads off and utterly destroying people.

Man, if they go all the way with Brock/Reigns, Paul Heyman's gonna have some work to do...

I think the worst part is that if you turned into the show late and missed this terrible opening promo, what you saw was Roman retagging with Dean Ambrose in the main event in what was probably his best match in months. It was a great match where, despite the help of an injured Ambrose, Roman had to *overcome the odds*, but in a believable way that made him look tough and cool the way the SHIELD used to.

Damn, I really miss the SHIELD.

The material is definitely awful, but I agree that Roman's not doing as badly with it as is often reacted. I thought the payoff of the actual segment "What I'm tryin' to say is...I'm gonna kick your ass." And then beating up all three guys? That stuff actually is good. Or like when he tells Big Show that he's gonna punch him in the mouth if he comes to the ring.

In time, either he'll get the hang of doing the childish humor that Vince loves, or they'll realize it's a detriment and have him stop doing it.

So that's how Roman Reigns became incoherent enough to pass for an 80-year-old man. Sorry, not sorry. You're full of yourself, actually something else. Snivelling suckup sellout suffering succotash son - how'd Vince miss "sycophant"? Donkey dung, kick your ass -- this is almost clever, I guess, and I for one look forward to seeing them duly double down and debut the Rollins Defecating Donkey. What I'm trying to say is, talk about word salad. Kane should force him to pass the concussion protocol tonight.

Long-term, this promo is actually going to help him. The text of it is SO bad that it's transcended Smackdown (unheard of these days) and leapt to the forefront of the WWE Universe news cycle. Which I think basically earns them a subtle soft reset on Reigns, if they want it. "Vince writes Reigns' promos" is common knowledge now, which should make it easier to eventually distance Reigns the performer from his awful booking this winter the way The Rock escaped Rocky Maivia. In the end, this will earn Roman more sympathy from smarkier folks than than anything else since June, and yes that includes the hernia, believe that.

Some of that sounds more like Cena when his lists trail off into cartoon references.

The wink to the camera partially saved the LITERAL ALLITERATION (and almost made me swoon). The fact that it sparked a legit chant from the crowd is bad news, though. Honestly, the worst part was "sorry, not sorry".

There's something beautiful about the idea of Vince McMahon personally writing promos for the man who will save his company and writing them like I would have written an e-fed promo in 1996, complete with stage directions about how this is a great a promo and how over my guy is. ("CROWD GOES INSANE AND STARTS TO CHANT HIS NAME." Match Strat: My guy hits his finisher, a top rope burning hammer.)

Speaking of the David Brent comparison, can we talk about Reigns addressing how hard it was to say, looking to the camera and winking at the end of the worst bit? If nothing else, this seems gif-worthy if anyone is so inclined. But I have a lot of questions about how meta that is and whether Reigns asked to do it himself (this would be ideal and give me back some hope for The Big Dog), whether Reigns really had trouble doing it in rehearsal and Vince added it as an inside joke/dig (the worst scenario) or whether Vince intentionally wrote a shitty speech with a punchline about how shitty it was.

But to keep the analogy going, with Cena and Reigns, Vince thinks he's writing a Season 2 Jim Halpert but he keeps giving us a Season 9 Nard Dog. Meanwhile, Daniel Bryan is already the Tim Canterbury the WWE Universe keeps trying to tell him that we want and need.

Uh, he's not The Man They Call The Juggernaut anymore. He's now "The Powerhouse! (Roman Reigns)". Which, if we're going to get him trotting out 70 year-old (I checked!) Looney Tunes references and they're settling on "The Powerhouse" as his nickname, motion to change Reigns' theme to this:
(relevant part starts at about 1:16, I am apparently smart enough to embed this but not embed with a start time on it.)

Anyway, if they're self-aware enough to have/let Reigns literally wink at the camera after a terrible line like that, they know where they are and need to course correct by skipping right ahead to the Diesel tweener promo ASAP, with Roman rejecting the attempts to turn him into Cena and still saying he's down to slap hands with anyone who has on a black glove (that is lined with weird, reflective, grey Lazer Tag trim).

So, it's quite possible the time to buy low on Roman's stock was sometime after Monday. Which is good in a sense because I thought it was going to drop much lower before it leveled out and rebounded.

To be honest, reading the comments and then watching the video made me expect something quite a bit worse than what I got Yeah, that was cringeworthy and poorly scripted (what a surprise from McMahon), but kudos to whoever in the chain of command added that touch of self-awareness. Hell, I'd even give Vince credit if I thought he was aware enough of his own incompetence at writing promos to slip something like that in. The wink turned the 'That was hard to get out' into 'Yeah, I know this sucks, but bear with me n I'll punch some people.' I almost wish I'd tuned in for Smackdown.

Out of curiosity, was there any Daniel Bryan? In the RAW thread for this week they announced he'd be back but I'm mostly hearing about Ambrose n Reigns teaming and Barrett jobbing to ... Sin Cara? Really? Oy.

Bryan's supposed to be back this week to pull in viewers for the first Thursday show. Although we're focusing on the negative stuff here (on the internet!?), Smackdown actually had two really good matches this week in the main event and the three-way tag title match.

That'd be giving them way too much credit at this point.

With that said, a heel turn has always been the direction they should have gone with Roman to begin with. Crowds are already starting to wisen up to him being the anointed one, so why not run with that? Why not have him be the Authority's hired gun and trophy champion, having him cut promos about being the company's Chosen One? It's gotta be better than THIS.

I'm all for a Roman Reigns heel turn, but as ANOTHER "Chosen One" heel character? We've just gone through Rollins AND Orton AND Batista shouting that they're the hand-picked Chosen (by The Authority) One, going back at least a year or more. Please God not that AGAIN.
