A list of the most Tortured Sports Cities (In America I'm guessing) as been done on ESPN Cold Pizza site... The list is

1. TBA
2. TBA
3. Buffalo
4. Chicago
5. Boston
6. Minneapolis
7. Seattle
8. Atlanta
9. San Diego
10. Houston
11. Washington, D.C.
12. Phoenix
13. Cincinnati
14. Kansas City
15. Tampa
*****

I guess they haven't filled the top 2 spots. I'm sure Cleveland is one of them the other, hmm Philadelphia maybe.

Maybe this list was done during the finals but even though, how is Tampa there considering the Bucs won the Superbowl recently but I can't really think of a city to put in there (not including Philly or Cleveland which I think will take the top 2 spots)

Tampa got a hockey team! They were excited! Then it sucked forever.

They got a baseball team! Yay! And it sucks.

The Bucs sucked ass for a long time and then they finally got a good thing going then proceeded to start sucking again and Warren Sapp is gone.

There's some Tampa torture.

Don't want to sound like a homer, but I'd make a case for Denver being in the top 2. The torture has eased in the last 8 years, especially when the Broncos won those two Super Bowls (once considered the football equivalent of hell freezing over). I think the local ice-skating team won some sort of title, too.

The Nuggets had a respectable season this year, but before that they were among the league's doormats, if not THE doormat. The ice-skating team has high expectations and has gotten upset a few times. The Rockies consistently suck and Major League Baseball toyed with Denver for about 30 years. The Padres were once rumored to be coming to town around 1988...then backed out. I think the Mariners also teased moving to Denver in the early 80's.

Of course, the Broncos were the laughingstock of the entire sports world in the 80's. Before the Bills, there were the Broncos. At least the Bills put up a fight in Super Bowl 25.. the Broncos were demolished in 3 Super Bowls in a span of 4 years. Badly. They were even ridiculed on the Simpsons (TWICE). Before Super Bowl 24, the common sentiment around town was wishing that the Broncos had lost the AFC title game.

David Treadwell's duel with the uprights in the 1991 AFC Title game was another heartbreaker. The back-to-back bludgeonings from the Raiders at the end of 1993 were embarassing. Joe Montana leading the Chiefs down the field on MNF in 1994 was another. The second year Jacksonville Jaguars beating the Broncos IN Denver during the 1996 playoffs was the final humiliation.

With all this, the town was incredibly surreal after the Broncos upset the Packers in Super Bowl 32. Even before the clinching score.. you could hear people hooting and screaming all over town. When John Mobley swatted away Favre's fourth down pass, the entire town literally screamed. Car horns were blaring. Fireworks went off. People were running down the street in their pajamas. After 35 years, the torture was over.

Not to sound too sappy, but no town should every have to go through that again. Not even Oakland.

If it's not US exclusive, I could easily give a nod to Toronto. Maple Leafs, Jays, Raptors, oh my.

Milwaukee could also be a slight consideration, unless they put it within proximity to Green Bay.

Cleveland has to be there, though. Indians, Browns, but at least the Cavaliers might get better.

Denver?! Oh I'm so sorry you've only won four championships in the last ten years. Bah! Perennial contenders in hockey and football and Carmelo Anthony quickly bringing the Nuggets back to respectability do not a 'tortured' city make.

Cleveland's gotta be #1. No championships in an eon, give or take, their teams in three of the major sports are flat out bad and going nowhere, and their hockey team folded thirty years ago. Literally nothing there.

I'd almost wanna say Toronto just knowing how badly they want that Stanley Cup (and are saddled with only CFL football), but nah, they deserve to wait.

John Elway and David Thompson do not equal torture.

Plus, most places never had the pleasure of a Doug Moe coached team with English, Issel and Kiki hanging up 140 every night (he jealously adds).

Canadian Cities:
VANCOUVER: The Grizzlies sucked, then moved to Memphis. The Canucks sucked, then got better, but choke in the playoffs. The Lions are in the CFL, and therefore don't really matter to anyone outside Canada (same goes for Calgary, Hamilton, Edmonton, Toronto, Regina, Ottawa & Montreal).
CALGARY: The Flames were really good, won a Cup, then really sucked, then got better. The Cannons sucked, then got better, then moved.
EDMONTON: A bunch of Stanley Cups for the Oilers. And then the sucking began.
WINNIPEG: The Jets were okay, then moved to Phoenix.
TORONTO: The Leafs haven't done much since 1967, when the won the Cup. The Jays won two World Series, then haven't done squat. The Raptors? Squat.
OTTAWA: The Sens haven't won a Cup since 1927, and haven't been close in that long.
MONTREAL: The Expos are the Expos...when they're good, the league goes on strike. Les Canadiens won the Cup in 1993...but have been iffy since.
QUEBEC CITY: The Nordiques got good, then moved to Colorado and won a Cup.

Overall, the most tortured city is probably Quebec City. Then Toronto, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Vancouver and all of Saskatchewan.

How about Indianapolis? Sure, the Pacers and Colts have had respectable seasons recently, but our fans are starving for a championship, baby. Plus the Pacers get no respect, and it wasn't too long ago that the Colts were the punchline to every NFL joke in existence. (Well, maybe the Colts and the Bucs).

Heck, we don't even have a major-league baseball or hockey team. Our minor-league baseball team (the Indians) and minor-league hockey team (the Ice) have won a couple of titles, but very few people in Indianapolis even pay attention to them.

And then there's the Indianapolis 500. I haven't yet met a single Indianapolis native who gets overly excited about it. All the visiting rednecks seem to love it, but Indy natives are basically like, “Who cares? Maybe it's an excuse to get drunk and sunburned, but that's about it.”

It's got to be Philly and Cleveland. How can you lose three straight NFC Championship games in a row. At home no less. Cleveland is just a punching bag. The Heartbreaking loss in the World Series to the Marlins and Braves,The playoff game to the Steelers, and two names that will bring any Clevelander to his knees Jordan and Elway. A case could be made for Oakland. Even geniuses like Billy Beane can get them pass the first playoff series. Besides the humiliating loss to their old head coach in the Super Bowl and the lose to New England in overtime.

Don't remind me.

Fercryinoutloud, if your beloved Elway was finally gonna get that ring that had eluded him for his whole career next year against Eugene Robinson (oh, wait...nevermind) and the Atlanta Falcons, why in the blue-and-orange hell couldn't you guys do the J-O-B for Favre and Co.!?!? :-)

The Pacers have been to the playoffs 14 of the last 15 years (oh heavens, I'm aging), have gone to the NBA finals once and the Eastern Conference finals five times. I don't think there's much to complain about with them. They get no respect because every other time they've lost in the first round. They either make a run or don't even try to fool you. I kind of appreciate that about them, actually.

Being from NE Ohio originally, I second Cleveland.
Championships:
Indians - 1948
Browns - 1964
Cav's - Never
Crusaders - never and left town.

What makes it worse is the teasing the Indians and Browns have done over the last 20 years.

I mean this completely on a sports level and not at all personally, but f*** you.

If Denver is ANYWHERE on this list, then Cleveland is numero uno. If you even ask why - all those years Denver lost the Super Bowl, GUESS WHO THEY BEAT TO GET THERE. '86, '87, '89? Yep, all HEART-SMASHING LOSSES for the Brownies. The Drive. The Fumble. The blowout. Yes, I'm bitter. Sorry, but I still hatehatehate the Broncos for that.

As for other sports:
The Indians -
In 1994, the Indians young core had gelled and was starting to show promise. They were no longer the bottom-feeders of yore - they were now quite competitive every night. What happens? When they are only 1 game out of first place, the season-ending strike hits. Then the amazing year of '95 - The Indians *destroy* the American League, going 100-44 in a shortened season. Can't imagine what they would have done in the extra 18 games! They battle their way into the World Series and get killed by the Braves. How do you top that? By taking virtually the same team and bowing out in the first round of the playoffs. The next year, they are amazing, winning close games in the playoffs, beating the vaunted Yankees in the first round, and even having the rent-a-team Marlins down at home IN THE 9TH INNING. Then JOSE F'N MESA had to give up the game and blow the best by-God chance the Tribe had at the Series. Since then, the team has been sold and completely torn down to start fresh, and we have been pining for a competitive team since 2000.

The Cavs -
They were a crappy expansion team for a long time. Then, when Wayne Embry was GM, they started building a great team. They had a great core of players and became one of the top teams in the East. And then they became Michael Jordan's personal punching bag. All those f'n Gatorade commercials when he hits "The Shot"? That's over #3, Craig Ehlo. In 1992, the Cavs had probably their best season ever, beating the Nets in the first round and retiring Larry Bird and the Celtics in a classic matchup in the second round. They got dropped in the Eastern Conference championships by, you guessed it, Jordan and the Bulls. The era was also marred by the collossally bad trade of Ron Harper for Danny Ferry. After that we had Shawn Kemp as the freakin' star of the team. Before last year, there were active rumors that the team was going to be sold and moved. Finally though, the luck may be changing with LeBron-mania. We as Clevelanders can only pray that he truly breaks from the historical trend.

So we're looking at a long tradition of being punching bags dating back to the 60's. Then, once the teams get really good, they fall tantalizingly short of the final championship. Yes, Cleveland truly should be number one on this list.

DrDirt - Don't forget the old NHL Cleveland Barons. Or the AFL Thunderbolts. But hey, how about the Cleveland Crunch? They won all sorts of titles. For Major League Indoor Soccer. *crickets chirp*

Sports Guy did a column on this "list" a few weeks ago. In it he goes over how ridiculously high Boston is on the list as well some other cities.

I would also echo Philly and Cleveland even though I'd put Boston as number 1, but with the Patriots winning two out of three years, I can say why they went down. I do think Cleveland should be number 1 considering they have never won a championship in my lifetime. Plus, I'm a Steelers' fan, so I like rubbing it in.

CLeveland should definitely be first. and Philly isn't a bad choice either, but how about Oakland being on the list. The Raiders went to the Super Bowl recently but go destroyed, the Warriors are horrendous. Yeah I know the A's are good, but they always lose in the first round (and Atlanta is on the list despite winning however many pennants in a row they've won.) ACtually that's a pretty even comparison, the Warriors suck as bad as the Hawks and the like the the Raiders the Falcons have made it to the SUper Bowl once recently.

Yeah, but the Braves just lose in the playoffs, period. As opposed to the Browns or the Indians that seem to find ways to lose in the postseason creatively.

But they did win one Series. It would be easier to take if the Cavs, Browns, and Indians just sucked period and didn't tease us so much.

Actually, I thank God for the Browns in that there's at least one team in the last 20-plus years that's more oh-so-close snakebit than my Dolphins are.
