Impact: Crossroads 2018

Show opens with Johnny Impact entering the arena flanked with guys carrying American flags. Austin Aries is now Canadian or something.

1. Tag Team Championship: LAX 2017 © defeated the Cult of Lee (Konley and Lee) via interference from Konnan

Afterwards, Konnan remembers to recover the bandanas that the Cult of Lee stole.

GFN flashback video was Monty Brown vs. Christian Cage. Weird how Brown never became world champion. We can resume assuming that Cage is on the shortlist for the TNA Hall of Fame.

2. Title for Title: X-Division Champion Taiji Ishimori v. meaningless Grand Champion yoga guy Matt Sydal

Sonjay Dutt is coming into his own as a commentator. During the match he talked about almost losing a tooth while wrestling, which forced him to wear a mouthguard for about ten years. Also, apparently Sonjay’s nickname is Detective Dutt. Shades of our beloved Detective Drew Galloway.

In a shocker, Sydal wins cleanly.

Winner: and New Dual Champion, Matt Sydal

Allie gives a confident sounding interview. She is not the scared apprentice that she used to be. She’s ready to become Knockouts Champion (for real this time).

3. Knockouts Championship: Allie defeated Laurel Van Ness © with a spectacular superkick to become the new champion.

Afterwards the announcers act as if she has never been champion before. Which is honestly fair, given that her first reign consisted of her pinning someone in a fluke in a multi-Knockout match. That first reign also ended a week or so later when Allie was forced to give the title to her master Maria via a fingerpoke of doom match.

Gail Kim celebrates with Allie backstage.

Austin Aries is interviewed about the main-event. Aries is continuing his “free agent” gimmick. He wears four title belts that he has captured from promotions around the world. During a camera zoom, I am amused to note that the Impact World Championship still has GFW on one of its sideplates.

4. Bobby Lashley v. OVE (w/Sami Callihan)

Eddie Edwards was supposed to be Lashley’s partner, but is at home due to nearly being blinded by Sami last week. Sonjay reminices about how he nearly was blinded by Low Ki last year. Continuity! Speaking of continuity, they also remember that Alisha Edwards exists.

After OVE has gotten the better of Lashley, the random monster dude Brian Cage shows up. Cage for the first time becomes relevant by squashing OVE. Sami nearly clobbers Cage with the bat, but Lashley kept Sami at bay via his spear move.

Winners: Brian Cage and Bobby Lashley

Afterwards Lashley tries to shake Cage’s hand, but Cage refuses and just walks off.

Johnny Impact is interviewed about the mainevent. He calls Aries insecure for needing to carry around all of those titlebelts. Impact actually makes sense here. Impact was the AAA champion for months (an accolade that TNA recognized), yet never felt that he needed to wear the belt when he made TNA appearances.

Feast or Fired is next week. Great opportunity for Lashley, Ethan, Aries, and Hania to all grab the same doomed briefcase.

Next up is Aries’s second title defense. The first was three weeks ago when he won against Drake in Drake’s rematch. Where has Drake been since then anyway, I wonder.

5. World Championship: Johnny Impact v. Austin Aries ©

Winner: Austin Aries, cleanly.

Afterwards, Alberto el Patron comes out – he wants the next titleshot.

Good show this week.

On one hand, Johnny has a point. On the other hand, I have trouble applying that point to Ultimo Dragon who did much the same thing. On the third hand, I would get a cable subscription just to watch this show (assuming it's available from my provider) if Aries responded by asking Johnny about the size of Batista's dick.

Incidentally, Aries also showed up at Ring of Honor with the TNA belt, with the permission of both companies. Between this and relinquishing their claim to the Broken Universe, it seems like the new regime at TNA has looked at everyone who has failed to compete with Vince in the past and decided that perhaps the best course of action is to not be an asshole. Thinking back, I can't really remember any company that has tried that particular technique.

How many independent companies have title belts? Aries should just go on a streak where instead of simply collecting victories, he collects titles, to the point where he has to pull around a wagon with all of the belts.
